I knew this was going to cause a bit of friction - half the reason I posted this thread coz there's nothing like a good debate!

Obviously, I don't like tattoos, but that's my personal opinion. As has been stated many times, it's a personal choice.

My only concern is that, for some people, it is a bit of a fashion statement, and we all know how fashion changes!

Reasons for having them, why do you need a reason?

I got mine for the hell of it, no particular reason at all.

Each one was 4 hrs in the chair, and I have one on each shoulder, and they are exactly the same.

They are celtic shields and signify 'forever protected', they have worked upto now.

If I get sick of them I will take them off.....Gladiator stylee.

Imsbman - I quite agree fashion statement tattoo's are silly and thankfully I have never been a fashion follower.

Mine are all individual and have no relation to any previous b/f's as suggested by Tel.

Of course you have. Seventy years ago you wouldn't have got a tattoo (if you'd been alive), because they were usually only sported by people in the navy, or people in gaol. Now they're more "fashionable" and the fact that you have one means you are a fashion follower.

Fashion tattoo's are normally small insignificant splodges or japanese letters a la Beckham style IMO, mine are none of these.

You also forgot to mention 70 years ago probably prostitutes would have had them as well, not saying that I am one of those though

I do not post here very often but I really feel the need. I must ask why PSlewis has to be so derogatory about peoples life choices, to suggest people with Tattoos are of a lower class is beyond redemption. Yes, I do have 2 myself and no, I do not live on a council estate. I have a very well paid job that I worked incredibly hard to obtain.

Comments such as his clearly demonstrate a clear element of inadequacy within his own life. People are entitled to opinions but there has to be a limit which, in this instance has been breached.

He'll shrug it off with some tripe about how you've bitten Austh, but yes, deep down he knows you're right about imbalance in his personal life. I doubt we'll ever know the full picture, however...

What gets me is why those who don't like them feel the need to be told a reason why those who have them do?

TBH the whole fashion statement crap only applies to about 1% of those with tattoos - for most people its about many different things - or just "because".

IMO those who can't understand why will never "get it" so there is no point trying to explain.

I for one would hate to be that "conformist" of what is deemed "acceptable" by society on an issue that harms no one.

Pete's just a troll, annoying yes , but harmless

"Harmless" except he genuinely offends people. I wouldn't call that harmless myself.

But by getting a tattoo you're doing exactly that -- following the herd. You think you're making a non-conforming statement: "Hey guys, I'm an individual" but in fact you're showing the complete opposite. I think that's what Pete was trying to get across, although in a slightly more subtle manner...

Carl - not sure of your basis for that.

I only personally know of 3 other people with tattoos in my circle of friends/aquaintances/work, etc, etc. And I didn't know they had them until after I had mine done.

Hardly following the herd, is it?

Many people with tattoos claim they don't care what others think ...in which case why is it that almost no-one (TelBoy's fish-headed mate being an obvious exception) has tattoos on their face?

Might it be that you think you'd be discriminated against, because most people, deep down, think that tattoos look either daft or ugly, and certainly disfiguring? If in all honesty you genuinely don't care what people think, you'd have them on display, no?

edited because to my eternal shame I didn't read it back properly before posting

What I'm saying is that if tatoos were not socially acceptable (like in the past, when they were only sported by sailors, criminals and, apparently, tarts) then you wouldn't have any. The fact that they are now socially acceptable means that by having one you are "conforming" as there are loads of people with them. OK the set of <people with tatoos> is smaller than the set of <people without tatoos> but the former is hardly small, is it? Surely you should be able to express your individuality without resorting to what amounts to socially-acceptable body mutilation. And, let's face it, tatoos are done by someone else so it's hardly your individuality that's being expressed, is it?
