Definitely more practical than the VXT! I needed one car that would do everything (when of course there is no such thing!) and the R32 was closest to my criteria.

VW build quality is apparently not so good these days, and dealers are patchy (the supplying dealer - Mann Egerton - was first class, shame they are in Exeter LOL ), so just like Subaru then!!

Ta for the offer to host pics

Saw the review on Top Gear, they said it was better than the latest Scooby and the Focus RS.

A Mk1 Golf uninvolving?

Oh please. Even in 112BHP trim, its possibly *THE* most involving car i've driven, apart from say an STi or my 300RWHP MR2

They're pretty fast. When I was running at 8.5 PSI in my MK3 Supra, I couldn't really close in one (4 people in the R32) while in 2nd gear from 30 MPH.

I'd like to run against one again - but this time a little more distance than just 100 metres!

Came up against a Golf R32 on the way home tonight. I tried to undertake him ..........
Err, isn't that illegal?
I gave up because I was doing 32mph in a 30 and as I respect the law/speedlimits I decided to slow off and let the guy take the glory.
Roughly translated as I was getting beat and this is the best excues I could think of.

Mark 1 Golf GTI, Campaign model...I would love to have one back for some fun. That car was probably the most involving car i have ever owned, although the Scooby nearly gets there....and the weird thing is that the reg numbers are very similar!

R32 is a serious peice of kit and I thought about defecting back to the GTI Owners Club!

I will be interested to see how many suffer from the same overheating problems that the VR6 did come summer time

given that the engine is even bigger!

Dave T-S.

I like the look of that motor and am vaguely considering one in the future.

Two things that concern me:

1) Are they as easy to upgrade as a Scooby?

2) Do you reckon two Doberman sized dogs could fit in the boot?

They look a bit tight to me.

Sennadog

1) From AmD, 271bhp is approx £1000, 300bhp is approx £2000. Compared to a PPP for an STi, about the same cost.

2) Only if you saw their legs off - actual boot area is very shallow because of 4wd gubbins. However, you can fold the back seats down and they would be fine then

Dave T-S - so thats what you swapped the VXT for then, see u couldn't resist a bit of tuning!

Hope you enjoy it!

John.

Ps. If anyone has some serious cash and whats to tune one of these, I was reading a german tuning mag and a company has stuck a twin turbo on this engine, everything is modded, putting out 500PS!!! 0-60 3.9 secs cost = 75K Euros
It still managed a excellent lap time on the mags test track, 0.5 secs down on a GT3 so the performance hasn't ruined its setup too much.

Had to make a reply to this post !

I've had my R32 about 6 weeks now and am loving it, I went from a Peugeot 205 Turbo with 200 Bhp to the R32. It feels a fraction slower and the handling is quite diffrent but sill "IS" a very involving drive.

The 205 was Raw and the feed back was incredible, the golf is very good although you feel so much more wrapped up with it. Only 3K on the clock so still got to loosen up yet.

Tunning WILL be on the cards !

From a blast round wales on the EVO crimbo meet !

Cheers

Matt (mattcony)
