Seems to me more people who go through boxes would rather replace like for like rather than save themselves money in the long run and buy a decent box when their first box goes.

£200 for the internals replacements and rebuilding it yourself.

10 Gearboxes = £2000

I think a standard UK 3rd gear would last a few weeks at most though with 400 lbft.

No it broke just before Xmas. Good job no one bought it otherwise they would be landed with the mess I now have and no chance of getting their money back since they were not the original purchaser.

I've got a six speed STi box.

Jun did 100 launches with this on a powerful car and it was fine, the 5 speed broke after 4 launches.

The six speed has far more impressive case rigidity and design, and weighs a lot more.

It is a new design and I understand won a gearbox design award, which the 5 speed never would have done as it was a lemon, as well as a very old design which had been made to make do.

Whether case flex causes separation of the gear teeth leading to failure or there is a metal problem I don't know.

bloody hell john, how did you break it? lol!! Don't you know you gotta use the clutch! I have done loads of hard launches with the lp gearset and touchwood, never had any problems with it!

Engaging 4th gear led to a load related clicking. There was then the geartooth sitting on the magnet in the gear oil. It has sheared off at its base. The adjacent tooth base is also damaged. However, the faces of the gears are fine, as are all the other parts of the box. I am actually very mechanically sympathetic, my original box lasted 30000 miles and only failed when it had TD05 torque going through it. My original clutch lasted that whole time as did my original UK engine to over 400 BHP - both are still usable and fine.

Edited typo.

I on the other hand are not mechanically sympathetic at all when it comes to launches and gear changes. You don't seem to have much luck when it comes with lp goodies do you?

Just spotted "Gearbox failure - awaiting refund day 18", so it broke on the 4th December? and your original post was on the 12th? That does sound a bit misleading if you counting xmas, bank holidays and weekends, as no company works those days!

No, but then my speed limit is not 40 mph

I buy something to a spec, the best advertised specs available, hence I bought LP bits as they advertise better specs than the competition.

Now I need to question specs a little more as I seem to be disproving them one at a time. I won't be trying any more.

18 days without my car, no refund yet. I have a six speed now to fit at the weekend. Failed Lateral Performance parts caused my car to be off the road for nearly 6 months out of the last 12. You can see why I am a little fed up!

No problems. I just want my car to work for more than days at a time. I've learned a lot about product selection with car modification, and am far more familiar now with oily bits than I would like to be as a result.

And hopefully I should have something I can enjoy at the end of it, and then know what works on Subarus.
