Cavalier 4x4 turbos
#31
On the way into work yesterday i saw a cav trying very hard to cut through traffic to catch me up (WRX03ppp). In the distance I could see the traffic lights were still on green so I slowed down allowing him to catch up, and I was in the outside lane with him right behind. It was obvious he was up for it, as he was revving his engine, which I must admit sounded sweet. No revs for me, the cool approach......amber....4,500 revs and dump the clutch ....swoooooshhhhhh, Scoob 10 Cav 0
by the time I had gone into 3rd the gap that had built up did not seem to get any wider, for a couple of miles I could not shake him off, then I got bored and let him catch up, it was then I saw the turbo badge along with a load of silly HKS / Nos stickers on the front wing.
The driver looked pissed off, as though he was surprised he had been trounced.
Must admit once we were going his car was quick, must have been non standard.

"My Cav Turbo is 320BHP (or thereabouts, depending on the weather)"
I've yet to see any Cavalier/Calibra making enough power at the wheels to be making an estimated 320 HP at the crank. It's strange enough that there are no dyno sheets for a tuned turbo Vauxhall.
I think people are taking Courtenay and Regals claims too seriously.

cjaffray, it's not my car i'm afraid, just a pic i like.
I doubt it's your old car as that one belongs in England somewhere. Although i did see a Cav Turbo for sale at Indy Car Sales several months ago.

Pie & Chips,
Nice car you got there mate Out of interest, what was hte power at the wheels on that run when on phase 2? Also, what turbo & boost are you running now? They're a T25 as standard I seem to remember aren't they?
Cheers,
Ian

That's estimated flywheel "BHP", not power at the wheels.
I've looked at EDS Motorsport website who developed the Phase chips and supporting mods. For a "320 BHP" package, power at the wheels is 250 hp.
I knew the output claims were exagerated.

Ian, calibra is my brothers, i prefer jap metal myself. His car in it's current guise runs a hybrid Turbotechnics KKK turbo, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back blades yader yader, the power graphs there were when he was running his phase 2 kit over boost was 19psi and holding 17psi. Now he's running the phase 3+ kit holding 22 psi all day long.
Cosworth, is that figure unusual for 4x4 transmission losses?????

The "315 BHP" flywheel figure was contrived through that old scientific chestnut called - "guestimates". A whopping 21% transmission loss...

But aren't transmission losses calculated from the coastdown?
Correct me if i'm wrong here, thefore an approximate engine output can be calculated.
21% sounds quite good compared to some 4x4 drivetrains, Heldex and Subaru ones being the big power sappers

I think those figures are very feasable actually mate

I very nearly bought an 11k miler in burgundy from Motorhouse. Really nice car. I was running a Std gsi at the time and I loved it to bits until the head went porus.
I saw one today and I still think they look sweet.
Watch out for the rear arches rusting though...

cav turbo's are a great car ,only got rid of mine as it was too old a car. handling is great, think it handled better than my impreza but that could be due to the sh*t tyre on my impreza. cavs arent much of a 0-60 car as 1st gear is really slow but once the car kicks in in 2nd and 3rd etc they are great. in standard form they arent that fast but mod them properly and you have a little beast on your hands for hardly any cash

Hi all, i sold my Cav turbo for a wrx, as has been said previously it is understated. After driving the Scoob i realised how bad the handling was, the 4x4 is fragile and its recomended to change all 4 tyres at once aside from that (every model has its pitfalls/Querks) they are easily tuned, cheaper to run than my scoob and i think still a head turner, In gear they're fairly quick. i personally never had a prob with mineand it wasnt a "pampered car" - HOWEVER i wouldnt buy another one now (been a bit spoilt with the scoob)
So given the choice go for a Scoob or if your a lil more flush a nice supra!!
