Police vehicle expenditure

The met have gone over totally to diesel bmw's now, brought cheap but will last twicw as long as the Omega which is now no longer in production. The bmw is far more nimble and quicker off the mark than the old Omega.
Some forces like TVP will stick in the general to Vauxhall (Idont know Why) Others use the Volvo we in TVP have rejected that. we will not get scoobys coz it isnt British and the smaller forces with little money run round in anything they can gwt there hands on. TVP and Beds have joined forces when it comes to the vehicle fleet and TVP provide Beds there cars so at least two forces will be the same.
Asd for Mercs well we have tried em and rjected them, so have Herts and at the end of the day what ever we buy we get cheap and we only break em anyway.

My guess is that the City of London Police cars do very few miles as after all the city is only 1 mile across. I would guess that with a low mileage the Mercs and BMWs are probably worth as much as they paid for them when they sell them.
For forces doing high mileages the cars irrespective of marque are probably worth nothing when sold. Hence the need for mass manufacturer cars as they are cheap in the first place.
ps I'll try not to get stopped by Nathan in the Skoda.
Incidentially anyone seen the speed camera in Pembury Road?

Yes Chris and I laughed when it got knocked over. However later found out it wasn't done deliberatly and that someone crashed into it! At least thats one thats proved to be in an accident spot!
There is also rumours of a mobile one along there now hidden in the bushes. Dont know if its true or just rumour but then I don't speed in built up areas anyway so not an issue for me

The speed camera was crashed into by a drunk driver. Who didn't fall asleep at the wheel of course, he swerved to avoid a dog
Still I found it bloody funny. One less speed camera

LOL he could have at least said a fox and made it slightly believable! Bloody 4 legged orange freaks everywhere in the town. Theres a nice dead example laying on Frant road currently, well it was on the pavement until some tw@t decided it would be fun to push it back into the road

Did you notice a while ago that someone had attempted to set fire to the speed camera on Frant Road They didn't make a bad job of it but it still bloody works.
Can't complain about the ones on the A26 St Johns but the Pembury Road and Frant Road cameras have been placed by the council for revenue generating, plain and simple. Bar-stewards.

Probably got the leather to increase the resale value. I see that some forces have cottoned on to the fact that white cars have crap resale value, and are either buying silver ones or ones in other colours with a "full body" vinyl wrap in white.
City of London police are red cars anyway, aren't they?

Carl they were in a silver Merc and no I haven't personally seen any red cop cars around the square mile. Mostly silver or white.
Nathan yeah I saw the Frant Rd camera, laughed when I saw it had been burnt. I do believe that is one place though where one is needed as I lived in that area for 20 years and the speed that cars come down that road is ridiculous. The Pembury one is a joke though and the St Johns one is really because of the school I guess.

Ian cheers for the map. So do the Met and City police share resources such as firearms and anti terrorism units or do they actually have their own individual units that work together?
City police pay good money compared to others and they seem to have a lot of funding for a very small area. Its the only force I have previously considered joining especially having dealt with them and was very impressed

Mind you whilst Frant Road might be a location where people speed, do they actually crash there? I suspect the accident figures all come from the junction with Bunny Lane, which is of course in East Sussex, and the accidents there are often caused by cars not stopping at the end of Bunny Lane. Including I believe a Kent Police Car!
I am also not sure about the one on the A21 just before the A26 exit. Shouldn't it be on top of the hill? And in any event since the accidents haven't they amended the road layout, and therefore shouldn't the KSI figures be rset to 0? Mind you no excuse for not knowing the camera is there!

Chris its right outside an old peoples home and if you have ever seen any of the mad coffin dodgers trying to cross the road there ud know they seem to have a death wish so at least if traffic is kept to 30mph they have a chance of missing all the old cronies wandering about in the middle of the road. There also used to be a school next to the pub, one I went to many moons ago and the traffic for as long as I can remember would come down that hill at ludicrous speeds. With the bus stop and junction as well its an accident waiting to happen which is why I actually agree with this speed camera.
As for the A21/A26 one its complete lunacy, should be further up just after the brow of the hill where it goes down to the bottle neck where accidents happen on a regular basis.

Bravo, could be that the City of London budget is dealt with by the City of London Corporation, therefore they might agree to pay for the Merc's out of the Corporations' budget. For what it's worth there was a brand new 50k+ Range Rover working the M6 this afternoon. Put's an E Class Merc into a bit of a corner don't it!
Carl, the red cars you speak about are part of the Diplomatic Protection Group (DPG) who look after foreign embassies etc...

LOL that would explain why you never see any of those red cars down where I work then - the Whitechapel end of the city at Aldgate, total dump round there as soon as you step one foot outside the congestion zone. Handy for curry nights down Brick Lane though
As for the Corporation paying I have no idea to be honest.

The first thing to remember is these camera are council placed.
As I said earlier the Frant Road camera is for speeding only. You very rarely get RTC's up there. However as you pointed out there are several nursing homes, a ped crossing, a church, a pub, an off licence and a school. All within several hundered yards. So IMHO the camera is justified. Lol at the Kent car that crashed, being driven by a PC with red mist i'm afraid, chasing a stolen car.
The A21 camera is to stop people coming down on that layby and corner at over 100 mph where I personally have been to 2 fatal accidents. There are plenty of prangs over the brow of the hill but no fatals AFAIK.
Nathan..

Possibly a bit controversial but there is a local cop who is permanantly seriously ill as a result of the chief con of Grampians tightness as regards vehicle budgets and exercising the right to exempt themselves from MOT's to the full, after the accident every patrol car in grampian was taken off the road for safety checks and somethin like 16 of them deemed un roadworthy! Funny enough they now have a heap of new astras running about! It's the hypocracy of it that gets me, if they pull someone with no MOT they throw the book at them when in reality the car they are/were driving was even worse! BTW, Tayside are running silver Mercs, something to do with resale values being higher than white?

Going back to the original question.....
My force (Wilts) has a deal with Honda to get most of our panda cars (Accords, Civics, Stream) . Get them very cheap and support the local economy (made in Swindon).
As for the Traffic cars, the fleet manager tends to lease them as that works out cheaper. We use mainly Volvo's and Omegas, with the odd Skoda, lexus,BMW thrown in. We get quite a few ex-demos cheap. I think its the manufacturers way of saying thanks as we always host the Natinonal Police Fleet Expo every year.
