I am going to reiterate what I said earlier... religion has come up time and time again in this thread and, to be honest, I leapt upon it too.... however in the dark ages people were willing to believe in anything, there was no civilisation, people had some sort of inbuilt need to unconditionally follow a form of leadership. Without religion civilisation would not have ocurred. All the most advanced civilisations were built upon religion, the Incas, the Romans, the Egyptians etc were all considered advanced yet were not above offering sacrifice to the Gods. Religion was the earliest form of law.
Our needs have changed since, and the more rational amongst us discard religion, however without it I put it to you that we would not be advanced as we are now.

a very good point eClaire, however, the ancient scholars were predominantly monks and religious men. I agree though that religion stifled science at the boundaries of understanding, and I think that was the point the usefulness of religion may have started to wane.

Yes, but if religion had never been fabricated then things like evolution would have been discovered much much earlier, these monks and religious men still had their beliefs at the back of their mind which would have restricted their studies because God created man, supposedly

I would agree that religion is the downfall and the making of the Human race.
Scientific rules have always existed, and always will. Unfortunately there will always be an element of disbelief at what is believed, and if that wasn't there, then what would be the reason to explore further into the world around us, searching for answers?

Convince me

Well... There must have come a point when humans stopped accepting that food was just there for them, maybe their intelligence lead them to look for patterns in their existence. They couldn't explain those patterns, hence refer it to an undisputable "higher being" - it was convenient and unarguable. It also gave rise to an excuse to challenge what they had been doing (the "natural" way) in the name of said higher being. Religion was the first thing that ever happened to unite large amounts of people to a common cause. You get enough people thinking the same way then meaningful changes can happen.
btw, I am not a theoligical student and I am totally non religous!

Explanation for ajm;
EGO's are at the heart of all "Mans" problems.
Our God is better than yours
My car's faster than yours
I went to public school you working class scum
We whites are better than you blacks cos we're educated
All BMW drivers are nobbers that can't drive
If you don't agree we're gonna go to war with you
All tory policies are $hite cos they aren't Labour ones (replace tory & labour with any Political party from anywhere in the world)
It's all down to EGO !
Now I'm off to Have a go at Terzo 333 for flicking *** butts out of his window !

I think the answer to that is that by the time the inquisition came along religion had outlived its usefulness. I was talking about much earlier in the timeline!

The ability to travel and map the world. Without it war could not be a long range prospect and long range weapons would not exist. Huge conglomerates could not exist globaly(oil/forestry etc) and would only be able to **** up their own tiny part of the planet.
