On the Canon DSLR forums at DPReview, they've been running a series of photo competitions for a while now. One thing they're doing, which we're not, is hosting an 'exhibition' gallery for pictures which fit the theme of the competition but which are not actually eligible to enter. It gives a means for people to display some of their best work and provide inspiration, without getting in the way of the competition proper.

Why don't we have an 'exhibition' thread as well next time round?

Thanks

erm not sure now, I potted so many, trying to get a good shot (with the camera )

If one thing, this photo comp gave me an incentive to clean my garage of car bits, and have a game or ten of pool

Just to check we are allowed to change the picture at a later time? Because I have taken two pictures but am not completely satisfied with them.

I'm miffed (or thick).

Was trying to do one of them zoom in/out long exposure pics to get that nice effect as in the above pics. Can't do it on my Canon Powershot S40

Does anyone know if this is possible, or is this one of them optical cameras only things?

If anyone knows if my camera supports it, or how to do it, please let me know

I think you'll find it's something that can only be done on a camera which has a fully mechanical zoom. Motorised zoom lenses, where the motor is controlled by the camera, are unlikely to let you zoom during the exposure - it's not something that people often want to do, and there's a good chance that electrical noise from the motor would interfere with the sensor and affect the picture even if you could.

Sorry

I'm looking sad by replying so quick...but this is the first time I've browsed SN today - honestly

Just a bit more detail about my picture...

It maybe surprising, but it was actually taken hand-held (but I may have been bracing myself against a barrier - I can't remember)with an exposure of 1/10 second - so not that long at all.

It was taken with a 16-35 zoom lens, which was zoomed, by hand, but obviously pretty quickly to get the zoooooom effect in 1/10 second.

I think the big trick that kept all the lines straight was that I started the zoom from the 35mm end, then pressed the shutter and I think the 1/10 second exposure finished before I hit the end stop at 17mmm. That keeps everything nice and clean with no jerks on the camera (except me of course ) caused by taking the picture and starting the zoom at the same time, or hitting the end stop of the leans while the shutter was still open.

Of course, having a camera that has virtually no shutter delay (well, about 80ms IIRC) allowing 'start zoom' > 'open shutter'> 'close shutter' > 'end zoom' to actually happen in that sequence is significant contributor to the overall success

Oh well. Probably explains why the zoom got locked once the subject was focused

I'll stick with fiddling in Photoshop then

Shame, cos it looks a really cool, but simple, effect. I like these photography threads cos I'm learning something

Cool

MartinM

Any chance you have a higher resolution version of OZ Racing ?

My other half likes it and it's the first Car related thing she has shown an interest in

Dunno - maybe that's why the first one's called 'be patient'?

My third entry is now up, replacing the first - I fancied a change from model cars since several other people have done them rather better than I did

Just a few more days to go now, get those films processed

Mike - Like any self-respecting artist, I trash my originals when they've served their purpose (aka I seem to have lost the original). Sorry

Springbok, you a paddler mate or just found the river maggots there and took photos?

I was going out tonight to try and get some kayak photos but it looks like you beat me to it - I'll try and think of something else.

Give us a shout (mail as per profile) if you are a kayaker, it'd be nice to get a Scooby Kayak meet going (even if it was incredibly small) Can do Dart / Hurley / Nottingham (where I am) / Wales...

Hope to hear from ya mate

Hey Shaggy,
No not a water person I'm afraid, Last time I was in a canoe I was in the scouts paddling up the tamar many moons ago.

I must say those guys deserve a lot of respect, it was freezing and I was stood by the river bank. I felt guilty rubbing my hands together when they were freezing most of there parts off.

I was supposed to be going to a Press Day on Dartmoor for a Rally (Newton Abott Audi stages) as I had been asked to take some pics for them. Ideal entry I thought Rally car and the title motion. Unfortunately it has been cancelled due to to lack of entries, so I popped dpown to the Dart as I knew with the rain that we have had that there would be some mad people out on the water

Springbok, sorry mate just thought you might be.

Tell me about it, was out in Nottingham last night and it was freezing - just have forget about the cold and do it anyway for the love of the sport.

Shame the rally was cancelled, then I could have used my kayak photos for this comp - may enter some tonight anyway.
