Keep sending the emails? WTF? GROW A SKIN!!
So TG's presenters don't unanimously think it'll be a future classic - who cares? I bought mine to drive, not to leave in a garage and polish every week.
All that sending emails will do is give May & Hammond an excuse to take the p*ss on next week's show - and how I will laugh when they do

Just because it's common doesn't mean it can't be a classic. We already know the Impreza is a classic, just ask any schoolboy.
If it has to be a rare car to qualify for classic status, then what is it that makes a car rare? Could it be that hardly anybody bought it. Or it wasn't available without a six year waiting list. It was too expensive against it's nearest opposition. Or it was only in production for a few months etc.
We know the Impreza is a classic for a number of reasons, not least because one of the major magazines voted it the "Car of the decade" for the 90's, most would consider that to be a major accolade. And yes it was affordable to the majority of the population. It was fast, it handled well, it was a practical family car, indeed it was all things to all men. It may be common for all these reasons and more, but that's what makes it a classic. I wouldn't stoop so low to as to email Top gear, it was after all the opinion of two men and not the majority.

From: Your home is worthless. You can't afford to run your car.Your job is on the line.Schadenfreude rules.
I thought it was a laugh and by their own criteria it was not a classic.
There do seem to be a lot driving around the UK and you have to admit that it is hardly the most beautiful car on the roads.
They did admit that it was "interesting" however.

I have one thing to say about those two contentious plonkers. The Nissan Bluebird?
Rare? eventually by dint of rust and running into the ground as taxis.
Interesting? About as interesting as a Jeremy Spake monologue.

206 GTi 180 - 1159Kg, 155 Bhp / Tonne
Maximum speed (mph) 137
Acceleration 0-62 mph (sec) 7.4
0-1000 m (sec) 28
It isn't the fastest thing on earth, but it is no slouch. And as for the old one being quicker through the twisties - doubt that too. The 206 GTi chassis is very stiff, fatter tyres etc.
In the wet though the 206 would get passed by the postman on his bike - understeer? Oh yes, like a b*stard, wheels still spinning in 3rs gear, just not nice at all

I disagree about classics status has to be rare, A lot of cars people keep as classics are often cars they have special memories for from when they were younger.
example, Mini's, Fiat 500's, MG's none of them were rare in their day, but are classed as classics now.
The guy with the frumpy hair knows sod all about cars and is to elitists by the individual marques to apprecieate a individual car for what it is, hence why he drives that heap of a Bentley.
Jezza knew good condition examples will be classic's in a few years. Look at his pedigree of cars from the past, compared to the frumps.
On a similiar not with the majority of scoobs being modified when they reach a certan age, what affect will this have on the classic status ??.

The bugeye will be a classic of the future since they were only produced for a couple of years (making them rare, especially the STI7) and are certainly interesting! Not beautiful though...

OllyK etc
206 180 is 1050kg and 180bhp
205 is 925kg and 130bhp
Ridiculous to put them against each other, and rumours abound that Peugeot had a say in it as well.
They should have put that 180 thing against my 205, that would have been more like it

Dream Weaver - fair point, depend if you are talking kerb weight, dry weight, wet weight, unladen weight, gross train weight, un-sprung weight etc.
End of the day it is heavier but has a lot more grunt. While your 205 may be quicker, I doubt it is standard, then we get back in to the "ahh but my car's quicker coz it has had x, y and z done to it".
Personally the 140 felt quicker than the 180 to me, but that's probably coz the traction control on the 180 was working overtime

I've spilt my words of wisdom in the direction of topgears web site, what good it will do I don't really know. But what I do know is I feel much much better now

Olly, mine's a 16v with 162bhp. Its not stupidly modded (just has Mi16 in it with K&N and Magnex).
IMHO that would have been a fair comparison. I know the rules were that they should be std, but it would have just been fun to compare them.

Dream Weaver - as you point out, it was comparing standard old with standard new. In more cases than not, the older version either won or held their own.
I don't think it was intended to be "fair" by modding an old car up to a higher spec to give it a fighting chance.
Don't get me wrong, the 205 is a cracking car and along with the VW Golf really got the "hot hatch" scene up and running.
The 206 is also a cracking car if bloody expensive on parts. I think a lot of what Clarkson was getting at was that many of the newer version cars have bloated, they have put on weight due to increased safety measures, they have more gizmos and gadgets and yet don't add more power to compensate. Pug have managed to add the bells and whistles and now with the 180 it has some grunt too. I always felt the 140 was under powered and could more than the power available to it - just want them to produce a 300bhp 4wd version now!!
