As far as I can remember cold calling is not allowed before 9am in the morning and after 8pm (or maybe 9pm) at night. Oftel stipulates that the caller cannot play music on hold, or anything else for that matter, to the callee.

A cold caller must drop the line to the callee within 5 seconds if an agent is unavailable to take the call.

Not sure if this still works but at one time if you left the phone off the hook it would tie up the callers phone line until you put the phone back.

Granted your grandparents won't be able to take any incoming calls, though it sounds like they don't normally at this time, and may end up giving the caller a larger phone bill.

But that won't sort out the actual problem, good luck with contacting Telewest with it.

OK, here is the plan. Telewest may not want to get involved unless you are willing to go to the police (you obviously need to ask them this first, but sometimes they give you the brush off until police are involved).

The police are often not keen to proceed unless you are willing to prosecute. OK, so then say you are willing to prosecute, and then Telewest will get involved.

If it turns out to be a simple resolution (ie, you find out is is someone you know, and the police can "chat" to them), the police will not be bothered if no charges are brought but the case is solved (less paperwork for them).

Silent calls are as much of a nuisance as non-silent pestering calls. Don't let Telewest fob you off by saying they only look into non-silent pestering calls.

I would contact Telewest ASAP - it seems regular and enough of a nuisance.

We used to get silent calls. I suspected who it was, but with no evidence....

Called NTL who were more than helpful. I now have a code to tap in, when activated anyone who with-holds their number gets a recorded message saying the person they are trying to contact does not except calls from people who with-hold their number.

It's brill because it cuts out all cold calls as well!!

If you have your suspicions on who you think it may be, you could leave your phone off the hook once they have rung you and then phone them using a mobile, if it's engaged you may be able to narrow it down slightly. Providing you are there when they call, and you have an idea where they are calling from.

My work uses an computerised dialer to tell us of extra hours, it's really bloody annoying and there's nothing I can do about it. They told me it's more efficient than employing someone to do the job for them. Utter Bar-stewards! But that's besides the point. Good luck with solving this, I hope you get the little *******.

I know NTL offer a service that if anyone holds back their number they get a message saying this number will no accept your call and asking them to redial without with holding their number.

This works very well and can be switched on and off by putting in the code supplied at any time.

It soon stops them.

I am sure all the other phone co's offer the same

Actually, I get a lot of witheld number pranks (psycho-exs) on my mobile and I have this feature which diverts 'withelds' straight to VM. Genuine people can leave a VM and they usually have no need to withold a number.

Now you can do this with a BT line too. You need to subsribe to the caller ID service and get a phone with a diplay and the feature to send defined numbers to VM.

I used to get this on my home line and used the BT service to stop it, I am now getting it on my mobile (Orange). As soon as you speak the line goes dead but if you remain silent it hangs up after about 10 secs (you just get some background office noise before it goes dead). I do not believe it is sinister (although it will be if the Muddy Funsters wake me up when I am sleeping off nights again!!!). Have now used the TPS to try and stop it.
