not all of the youth of today(im still clinging on to it) are like this. im 21 and started my first job at 16 for 55 pound a week on a modern apprentice. i have changed jobs 4 times got all my qualifications and am now a well paid paint sprayer doing work for all the major insurance companies.
you can't just expect to jump into a job that pays 20k a year it dont happen, you have to work for it, start at the bottom and work hard, then maybe people on here may give chaos some respect

I took a crap job after I graduated to get foot in door, was approx 11-12k a year, but included a 100 mile round trip to get there and back a day

Luckily got offered one that paid a hell of a lot better so took it.
At the end of the day 10k for someone with no A levels let alone degree isnt bad going, my Step Dad pays his Trainee about 8.5k and shes got 3 or 4 A levels.

I got an appreticeship at 17 on 8K a year. Took all the courses that came up and worked my ***** off. 7 years later and I'm in a new job earning nearly 4 times that.

When I met my wife she was earning 10K, living on her own in a flat with no debt. She's still on 10K a few years later as she didn't like the next job up from hers (she tried it and found that the hassle wasn't worth the money). Now she's learning to drive so she can look further for a job better suited with more money.

The point is Chaos, you need to get a job, even a dead end one, to start saving/driving/buy car, insurance, petrol, etc. Then you have a chance of looking further afield for a decent job.

Unfortunately I get the feeling you'll be signing on like most lazy, work shy sods.

suck it up boy! Hate to be (another) person to tell you this but starting on a crap wage when you have no experience is just how it works. 10k can go a long way if you need it to. Last year I lived off 8k (study grant) and I lived away from home (£65 p.w rent) and I had a car!

Right now I am back living at home and earning 12k and the only reason I'm even moderately stretched week-to-week is because of the scoob's thristiness!

Oh and for the records my 12k a year is what 10 GCSES, 4 A-levels, and 2 degrees (BSc & MSc) has got me, oh and I'm still earning more than most of my friends off my course right now.

A friend of mine who was in the same year as me at school but left half way through a-levels started on 9k and he is now earning about 17k. Work Experience is a wonderful thing...

Chip had it right, the world does not owe you a living. You have to get off your backside and learn to make your own way. I'd suggest you asked your dad for some friendly advice,but we know why you can't do that!

You just have to come to terms with the fact that you are not that important and that you will have to prove your worth before you can expect to get anywhere in this world.

Chaos I can see why you end up arguing with your Dad. You sound somewhat lazy.

When I was 18 I flunked all of my A Levels. I got up off my butt and wrote 30 letters to various employers. Not fun but I did it. Out of those letters I got 4 interviews. Out of those 4 interviews I got offered 2 jobs. I took the one paying £3,726. At the time beer was just under £1 a pint. Now round my way it's about £2.50. So my starting salary equated to around £9,315, but at that time basic rate tax was 30% so my disposable was less.

Now 18 years on with a lot of hard work, (60 plus hour weeks) and a little luck I find myself running a team of 18 people and getting rewarded quite handsomly. I have a brand new Scooby in my drive, my third in four years, I holiday three times a year and I have just had to ask how much beer is a pint because I really have no idea, I just hand over the cash.

So my advice to you is, if the job that pays £10k a year interests you, apply for it, it really isn't a bad salary for a school leaver. Expect to get knock backs though, if I'm honest and having read a number of your posts you really do have an odd attitude to life, you sound both ungrateful and aggresive. A skilled interviewer will pick up on this and it may signal you as someone who is difficult to manage or work with.

On a final note remember life isn't all about money. After my 60 hours in the office and 3 hour daily commute I actually have little time for myself or my family.

You are correct Chaos- it isn't worth it. The world does owe you a living, there is lots of spare cash out there you just need to be creative in obtaining some of it for yourself.
I've never done a hard days work in my life (and proud of it) and don't intend to and I've done fairly well by anybodies standards. I took my first job at the age of 25 and 5 yrs later I'm earning well in excess of the national average and have a modest portfolio of investment propeties. I didn't bother with a low paid job and just moved straight into something with fairly decent pay. Why bother working your way up from the bottom of the ladder?- think big not small like most of the muppets who've contributed to this thread.

Small dreams are for small men- think big chaos and stuff the pathetic protestant work ethic people are trying to indoctrinate you with.
