I think they did the right thing, and they should be doing it more often aswell. It's one of those things that annoys the hell out of me, when you see drivers with blown lights or badly adjusted headlights.
I had a bloke pull up next to me at a junction one night. He stopped to tell me that one of my headlights had blown. No probs I said, and turned round to go back to the petrol station I'd just gone past to get a new bulb.
Unfortunately not all people are like this. Someone may have a really nice attitude with the police when stopped, but decide to ignore them anyway (especially on small/illegal number plates), so by issueing a notice to everyone they stop would ensure fair treatment across the board.
Thanks for the thread though, as I now know that if I ever recieve one of these, not to pay for a garage to stamp it for me.

WTF are you having a go at the police for? 
They have done their job, haven't fined anyone, handed out any points etc. All they have said is that they want to check its been fixed in 14 days because there are too many people in this country who wouldn't bother having it fixed.
The garage is the one you should be having a go at, not the police ffs
There are times when the police are bang out of order and get justified responses on here but this is definately not one of them
*shakes head in disbelief at the way some people here use the police for venting their anger*
