Errr, what about ManOwar? they're cool arent they?
I used to listen to that as a yoof, but havent in many years, all radio/dance stuff now, but still enjoy it when it pops up now and again.
It does seem to have outlasted its critics at least, I always loved stuff by Metallica, Megadeth, and even cheese rock like KISS, Ill even admit back in the early 90's when I listened to it, I had the customary down the back long hair!!

Manowar - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! I used to share a house with a couple of guys into them, and it never failed to give me a laugh or several!

Just cranked up the stereo with Sepultura - 'Arise'.

Probably the best band I ever heard was Exhorder. They did a couple of albums and were the pre-cursor to Pantera but much meaner and heavier. Truly awesome stuff.

Just listening to this old stuff makes me realise how ppolished metal has become. has lost a lot of its grit - certainly think the thrash era was the best era IMO.

AllanB, you complete saddo !!! I remember watching Candlemass on the Power Hour way back in '88. That guy was completely off his ****!

Would anybody actually admit to being a fan of this band?!

drumsterphil, the Sepultura album, 'Arise' is another fine example! I still listen to it today. The heavy industrial machinery noises on some of the tracks still make my mate and I p*ss ourselves with laughter. I assume it's meant to sound menacing...

Mark.

LOL@ Bathory ..kind of crushing Viking music no? i remember taking one of their albums to a school disco .and the daft sod even put some on for us all ... well, five of us heading banging wih all the girls in their posh frocks standing there a giving it WTF?? LOL!

Some great bands been mentioned here, Obituary i used to love, along with Metallica, Death, Kreator, Slayer Megadeath, Sacred Reich, Suicidal Tendancies, Testament, Voivod, Over Kill, Exodus, EvilDead .. still got loads of material by all these bands, and from time to time go through an odd stage where i play nothing but the old skool classics.

Could never really get into Nuclear Assault, Onslaught, Cerebal Fix, Acid Reign, Grinder even though i still have their albums in my collection.

ahhh .. some dam good memorys there .. and regrets.

LOL... just remebered been mistaken for Andrew Craighan from My Dying Bride at some gig in Bradford .. i used to have blonde hair down to my waist, and some you kid ran upto me shaking my hand telling me how good he thought we were ... i just smiled and said 'thx man' ... LOL!

I wouldnt mind, but i actually used to talk to Andy and Calvin regulary while out clubbing back in the early 90's, he laughed like hell when i told him the tale, told me i should have blagged a drink out 'em

best thread for ages so far.

Who reckons Maiden are really metal. I really didn't like thier early stuff but Somehwhere in Time and Seventh Son were very good.

Candlemass are great. I remember catching my very prim and proper mum ironing to this and singing along , it was a comedy moment.

In terms of newer stuff I've really got into Fear Factory.

Any other Nephilim fans out there I wonder ?

Iron Maiden 'Iron Maiden' was the first metal album I bought although admitedly new wave of british heavy metal. Definitely metal , but not a patch on thrash, speed or death metal. 'Live after Death' is still one of the great live albums, Powerslave being my fav studio album, probably.

Really got into Fear Factory and IMO they are one of the tightest live bands I have ever seen (used to cover 'Replica' in one of my bands a long time ago - and didn't wimp out on the triplet double-bass finish either!).

Another recommendation is a band called Strapping Young Lad. Make FF look like a bunch of pansies though their name is a bit suss!

I saw Xentrix with Mortal Sin once . Mortal Sin were an Aussie band who used to play the Neighbours theme tune dead heavy and that was cool.

One thing that made me laugh was I was round my parents house a couple of months ago with my gfs daughter whos 15. Now I'm 33 and was going through my old band and tour t shirts ( hundreds of them, 99.9% black) and she was picking up quite a few and saying ah cool can I have this. Let her have a few but no way was I letting her have my Nuclear Assault or Sisters of Mercy T shirts. The Nivrana one went down really well though.

Just sitting here listening to Death's Pull The plug, damn its so good !

Allan, sounds very familiar, i have loads of tops from concerts, most are very well faded now (i wear them for work ) but i have a couple of Carcass and Death ones that i have never worn and are as new.

Mortal Sin, just looked through the old record collection, i have the album Mayhemic Destruction and the 12" single 'I am Immortal'.

Lost half my vinyl through an ex many years ago though

Anyone remember a band called Atrohpy? They came from Tucsan Arizona, spoke at length to their lead guitarist (IIRC) who ended up giving me his home address so i could write to him , not that i ever did (he left the band a year or so later to keep up with his medical studies). Was on cloud nine at the time, as there was quite alot of girls hanging around, and all he gave them was the record companies address.

Xentrix - saw them live in Portsmouth. Cool band and top blokes.

Atrophy - I have an interview with them on a Hard n' Heavy video. Never heard much of there stuff. Forbidden are on there too, another Bay Area thrash band along with Metallica, Testament etc(that would have been a cool place to live during the thrash explosion!).

Saw Venom at some of their first ever gigs in Newcastle (20+ years ago now) when the whole black metal thing kicked off. Mind you, they were crap back then and didn't improve that much with age ...... nevertheless, genre-defining.

Red face

Allan, I'm a Nephs fan, loved Elisium but all went a bit poo after that. I like a good blend of cheese (The Mission, March Violets etc) and good old fashioned goth (Bauhaus, London after Midnight, Sisters..) But I also love Metal (but Manc goths don't like it if you stray *slaps own wrist!*) I have always been into Metal for as long as i can remember and got into goth through Black Metal (oddly enough). I have now found myself going full circle and delving back into my oldies like Wasp's 'Crimson Idol' album and have dug out my Skid Row and Whitesnake tapes (damn fine stuff). I agree with everyone else, Metallica have spent too much time pushing pens and wearing suits to produce anything decent in recent years, but on the upside if it gets kids to look into their back catalogue it can't be a bad thing. Oh and top 5 metal bands:

1. Sabbath - Anyone care to argue??
2. Slayer - For their cracking performance at Ozzfest '98
3. WASP - started it all for me
4. Pantera - Moshtastic hair music even now (I still windmill unashamedly but hey I've got the hair for it)
5. Metallica - at 5 because of their recent errors but its hard to hate a band with such a fine heritage.

Wot a top thread!

I saw Slayer @ Manchester Apollo in '87 ish - fastest band I had ever seen!

Half way through the set Tom Araya says "we're gonna change the tempo a little now" I thought they would slow down...........no chance FASTER than ever!!!!!!!!

marvellous!

Wuss and Allan B,

Great memories. Hang the pope used to be our 'bring in the new year tune.' 40 seconds. Just long enough to be rid of Big Ben. Never will I forget the time round my mate's house when the record stuck (overplayed or we were just making the floor shake I guess)kept jumping so that the song went on till 10 past midnight. Hurty neck time indeed.

As for Obituary. Strange and medical indeed, but you want to listen to Carcass if you want loud and angry. Descanting the Insalubrious (on 'Symphonies of Sickness' I think) was a personal fave, though I have banned the CD from my car jukebox a few months back due to it being a bad influence on my mortality!

Following on from the thread itself... (suppose I may as well )

Slayer - Yes :-) all of it :-)))) Seen them live after many years of trying and they were as awesome as I expected and not the disappointment that was Metallica live.

Anthrax - Never really 'got it' but loved them live in Brixton and some of their tracks. "I'm the Man, I'm the Man. I'm so bad I should be defective" still seems to pop out of my mouth far too often :-)

Megadeth - Never really got much into Dave Mustaine's lot but was definitely converted after the Wembley Arena gig with Sucicidals, Slayer, Testament (can't remember concert name).

Top moments? Many at Astoria - Acid Reign (oh my god I was so bloodied!) and Coroner definitel highlights

Joolz

Still nursing sore neck and listening to this $hite.
