What rpm does the engine sit at in 5th when doing 80-90mph? The turbo must be spinning? Surely that will drop the ecomomy??
I have a Legacy TT and try to keep it in 'the valley' on long journeys (4000-4500 rpm ~ 85-90mph)
Cheers

Hell yes. Even in a UK car at 80mph the engine would be doing 3200rpm in top, with the lower-geared Japanese market cars revving considerably higher. However, while there'll be enough gas throughput to spin the turbo, if you're light footed enough, the wastegate will be spending most of its time open.
If you're desperate to conserve fuel, this is where an AFR meter can help you, if only by showing you when you're in closed and open loop modes.

Had my MY00 Wagon (Unmodified) since the beginning of December. Most of my driving is to and from work. Either Motorway or A/B roads (depending on route) until I get to Nottingham then 30/40 mph stuff for the last 3 or 4 miles.
My Average to date is 19.2 mpg with a best of 25.8 and a worst of 16.3 (must have been a play day!)

Just doubled checked my assumptions using P5TPB's link to the calculator and it confirms I get about 18-20mpg in my Type R running Optimax.
Most of my drives are fairly fast country roads (65%), town (20%) and Motorway (15%). Had 350 miles out of a tank on my first week of having the car on a long motorway run but this is now very unusual (guy in local Shell Garage even sent me a Christmas card...)
Worst case I've ever had was when I track dayed the Scoob at Brands - each 4 or 5 lap session drank about 1/5th of a tank!!

USed to get 24 mpg regular until I fitted decat down pipe .. then down to 20 mpg .. may be I was using the power more?
Currently with header leak about 16 mpg.
But on 200 mile motorway run, got 36 MPG.! 70 ish all way apart from the obligatory M6 motorway traffic car park near birmingham.

I have just managed to get 310 out of a full tank, being very careful on my way to work and back (120 m/way miles per day) to stay around 80MPH. Seems pretty good to me. My VR6 only used to get 280 out of a full tank (probably doing around 90MPH). But jesus, its a pain in the butt keepin it at that speed with loads of muppets in crap cars want to race you every day
