I always disliked the idea of getting married - thought it was basically a bit ego trip:
"oooh - who are we gonna invite?"
"oooh - what will i look like in a silly white dress?"
there's loads of hypocricy in it - how many peoole have got married in church when they don't set foot in one from one year to the next?
how many people have you seen speaking their wedding vows when you know full well they have or will cheat on their partner?

over the years i have mellowed out on the subject, a bit. but when we get married it will be a simple civil ceremony followed by a good **** up for friends and family. one of the best weddings i went to was at Bow Registry, followed by a curry at Naz Rul in Brick Lane. That's a lot more honest, IMO.

PC - that sounds like an ideal wedding, nice and simple, followed by a good ol pish up and a ruby. And all the money saved on the wedding can go on either beer at the curry house, or a honeymoon

You could just exchange rings in front of friends and family, without the reg office bit. Celtic gold bands engraved with both your names in Gaelic is the way I'd go, then on to the massive **** up

ProperCharlie-
i would say the main reason to get married is if kids are involved. I have been with my girl for 7 years, we are only getting married now there is a little un on the way. it just makes everything a lot less complicated (and gives me proper rights, too )
There's those specs again. I did just the same, had no want at all to get married until she announced she was pregnant and constantly reminded me of the "unit" benefits.

Married 7 years and been apart 2, seen my daughter 4 times in 2 years for less than 20 minutes at a time.

Children only add to complicating things. Going your separate ways without the mutual love for children would be so much easier.

Your so-called rights are a joke, believe me.

Only 2 things I love about marriage:

1. Sex on tap (well, so far!)
2. 100% of both hard-earned assets are shared between you.

Its great

Spoon - i see what you are saying but things are (hopefully!) a bit different, as i was the one that wanted to start a family, and the marriage idea was kind of mutually concieved. i know that things can go wrong (i've seen it hundreds of times), but i am fairly optomisitic about our prospects, otherwise i wouldn't be having a kid.

Bravo- I kind of agree in so much it gives you the right to fight but not the right to insist the mother complies.

PC- I too thought along those lines.

Maybe some of you should read http://www.ukmm.org.uk to see some of the 'justices' done to married men in relation to custody etc.

When my parents divorced, I lived with my Dad. That was rare let me assure you. I am in no fluff fairy land with my marriage.

Whats all this sex on tap? I thought that was the first thing to go? Thats one of the reasons I've remained single, shallow get that I am, so if it did dry up I could tap another source (so to speak). You mean there are people who have been married for years and still go at it like bunnies? How do you married guys kerb the I want multiple partners syndrome that seems to affect us males?

Crikey.

I meant having to horizontally jog exclusively with the same person forever is a bit scary. Wasnt suggesting having a harem on the go (although...). Im a bit of a serial monogamist myself. I was under the impression the majority of blokes worked that way. Ooops.

I'll get me coat.

Through 'cheating' or 'divorce'.

We can't change 4.5 million year of evolution overnight

How does that work then? Once you know you can have something whenever you want then you want it less?

SiPie - sorry it was not a slur on you that you sold your scoob for a better life, its just that I have given up far more and lost out in the past, maybe I am just a tad bitter now

Gave away too much that was special to me to keep other people happy and ended up having to start again and much the poorer.

Have worked hard to get my car and am possibly far too bitter to sell it at the moment.

NOT MY PERSONAL OPINION (Honest Babe!)

Its like a toy.
When you first see it, you want it really badly.
Then you get it.
You play with it every day and it starts to wear out.
Then the toy becomes yesterdays news - all your mates have new ones.
Your toy suddenly seems crap compared to the new ones out.
UPGRADE TIME

Damo

Edited because married life has sozzled my noggin

Sort of. The longest relationship I had lasted 4 years and we lived together. I thought she was gorgeous so it was good for 3 years and then she went off the boil for a reason I couldnt fathom. I thought this was a bit unfair as to satisfy needs I would have to be unfaithful which she wouldnt wear so it was a bit catch 22. We struggled on for a year too long b4 calling it quits.

Nowdays I dont like getting too involved as a defence mechanism I guess and when I get bored I tend to just cry 'next'. Alot of it seems to be the thrill of the chase I spose. When it all settles down I get a bit fidgety.

A sad, lonely old existence for me then I guess!
