DOWN PIPE -----group buy
#31
£150 is outstanding value for a quality H&S product. I bought the centre-pipe and backbox during the last group buy and can't fault it (sounds good too). Wish I had bought the downpipe at the same time..

What is the likely BHP increase, from fitting this down pipe?
A local mechanic told me only 5 BHP,this is a small amount-considering the problem of having to re-fit the cats for each mot.
Is he correct???

I think 5bhp is about right - for a normally aspirated car. However, because the Impreza is turbo-charged the increases are substantially more - 30bhp is a figure that's often quoted, plus turbo spool-up will be slightly quicker also.
To obtain the biggest advantage from a de-catted downpipe an ECU remap is required.

I see.
Any ideas on how much a re-map on a ECU would cost?
If around 30BHP is on offer, for a simple down pipe change-this seems very inviting.
Are the any down sides to fitting one? (Other than mots)
A whole 30BHP?

I'm no expert, and the 30bhp isn't a guaranteed figure, just a figure I've often heard quoted for a de-cat. This will invalidate your warantee. The de-cat downpipe will make the car noticeably louder - this could be a disadvantage depending on your point of view.
A remap isn't required, but you will definitely benefit by getting one - cost for a remap is around £600

£600 Holy cr@p!
Just to get this right,I would still benefit by fitting a down pipe
even if I left the ECU as standard?
And we think the gain would be more than 5 BHP?
Thanks again, just want to make sure its worth paying out for!

Definitely more than 5bhp! Just been looking around, 15-20bhp seems a realistic figure for the downpipe, 30bhp must be for a whole system (and is a figure quoted to me by a company selling exhausts at the Autosport show).

Centre and back box give approx 18BHP so with the down pipe you can except approx 30 BHP( complete de-cat system )in total. The spool up will be quicker and it will pull a lot stronger under acceration.
Ian
P.S As for mot the Xtreme Scoobies have a double catted centre pipe that we made for mot purpose nudge nudge wink wink.

Can somebody explain the exhaust sequence on a classic turbo from the back box running forward, not sure where the up pipe comes in to it.
Also if buying the new H&S downpipe what gaskets will i need, also do you have to mod anything i.e. heat shield ??

Boooo !!
With the sensor do you just blank it and coil the thing up out of the way? Or do i still need it, i suspect so
Sorry about the potentially stupid questions Ian!
