Wink

Sticking your right indicator on for 1/2 a mile or so usually gets their attention, and they'll pull over.
Its not to intrusive as to get the bird / waved fist etc.
I've found flashing your lights just makes em more determind to block you.

motorway driving test, use those programmable road signs to say KEEP LEFT
Absolutely spot on Ian. I use the M3 every day and cruise all the way up on the inside lane at a constant speed with the lorries, waving at all the **** in the middle and fast lane sat nose to tail at a standstill. (I only do 2 junctions - Bracknell J3 - M25 - Feltham J1).

Ian
Having just seen and read through this thread I was surprised your suggestions weren't made sooner - seems so obvious and spot on.

I have noticed it's all the motorways going in to and out of London that are the worst, but has been spreading further afield over the years.

People in London must be so used to sitting in traffic jams round the streets, they feel insecure when the get on a big motorway, so all bunch together in lane 3 for comfort

I always see 10% traffic in lane 1, 15% traffic in lane 2 and 75% in lane 3.

Whilst there are idiots who can only drive in lane 3, I seriously think we should adopt the American way that on a multi lane road you can use any lane that is safe. If the traffic is spread out more evenly across the three lanes, most of the traffic problems go away . It has got to be cheaper to reprint the Highway code, than build new lanes all round the motorways.

And another thing - when they build the new lanes, where will they be .... they'll be on the inside, so everyone still sits in the outside lane and the new lanes make no difference

This really makes me mad and yes after waiting patiently I normally undertake in lane 1, when both lanes 1 & 2 are empty.
Rant over

hogging the outside lane is one of my pet hates next to straight lining roundabouts and junctions if you go onto the motorway the inside lane will be empty and there will be loads of cars driving in the middle and overtaking lane, and they wont pull over as they will be overtaking a car in about 2 miles makes my blood boil. i just under take people like this now even if im in my transit and beep the horn so to suggest to them WTF are you doing

Thumbs up

This winds me up a treat as well.
But......
The Highway Code
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.
If the muppet in the outside lane is there for no reason, then obviously there is nothing in the middle lane - therefore you should be in it. This would mean that you can undertake, as "you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right" - as long as you don't weave in and out!
IHMO of course.
Just keeping up with the traffic in my lane officer!

Talking

Used to hate this when I was lumbered with the worlds worst van(s) for work:

a 2 cylinder transit (when it feels like it) and an Irish Spec Citreon Berlingo

You use up the previous mile to get upto 80odd mph, only approach some dawdling muppet hogging the 3rd (or 4th) lane. You have to slow to 65mph then - if your lucky they move over.

Great, but I'm in a crappy van that has no oomph and I've lost my momemntum So I end up crawling past them and get arsey (scooby? ) drivers cursing at me cos I'm overtaking at 66mph and in their eyes - lane hogging

Worse still, the car I'm overtaking decides to speed up, So I end up giving up and falling back behind and moving over to let the irate lar-dee-dars pass me. And then the dawdler slows down again What is it with drivers who can't hold a constant speed on a motorway?

....Then the whole thing starts all over again

well, 'til I quit the job anyway
