But the thing is, Scottish people are renowned for being happy, jolly and helpful.

I think it's the influx of toffs in Edinburgh who think because they're of a higher class they wouldn't be seen dead helping those in need, even if it is kneeling down helping an old lady pick up her belongings or saying to the bus driver 'Sorry, someone would like to get off the bus and the doors aren't open'

Tell you something though, I'd never give up my morals, manners and beliefs for any amount of money or to be classed as middle/upper class if it meant acting like I had the god given right to be an arrogant tw@t.

In my experience the real upper class in Scotland are the nicest, most down-to-earth people you are ever likely to meet.

Most of them are as mad as hatters, but have a genuine concern for their fellow human beings, no matter what their perceived 'class' or background may be. I don't think the wildlife are quite so lucky though!

'youve got a scots tongue in ur head'
thats why my granny told me.
it means u should be able to say exactly what u want.

i feel that stands for these situations...
tell someone that they did wrong.
ask someone for help / offer help.

we dont speak enuff.
its amazing how rich it makes life if u talk to people.

this is where scots should be good.
but we seemed to have lost the knack.

I was sat on the back of a crowded bus a few years back and it stopped to pick up someone (as they do) and a guy got on and started arguing with the driver. He then proceeded to start beating the **** out of the driver.
All the old women on the bus started shouting at him and all the blokes....get this....looked out the windows pretending they couldn't see or hear anything. I ran up to help the driver & the bloke then legged it.
It takes a lot to wind me up but I was disgusted at their behaviour & called them a bunch of spineless b@stards.
Some of them still protested that they didn't know anything had happened.
Simple fact is most people don't give a **** about anybody but themselves & their own family nowadays

I think we should all take heed really.

I'm not blabbing about do gooding or anything, it simply comes down to respect.

Next time you see someone being a tw@t, tell them! I certainly will, cos I have a Scots tongue in my heed and proud of it

young people
Please don't tar all of us with the same brush, I always consider myself to be polite and respectful, and often help the elderly in difficulties and always let elders in front of me in bus ques as well as getting up from my seat if there are none available.

eclaire, what you done was a very nie thing but I am also a little guilty of being one of those people that you describe in the morning. I can only put it down to the fact that I tend to travel to work in a daze, when I reach Waterloo station its every person for themselves because if I spent time trying to be nice to people and not get in anyones way then I would get the sack for not getting to work on time if at all.

I will invaribly give up my seat on the train or tube for old people or pregnant women if I see them.

When I first starting travelling to town I used to complain about how people just appeared to be on a mission and were 'blinkered' to their surroundings and now I find myself one of those people.

....but I think eClaire was describing pretty rare occurences. ie, it is not common (IMHO!) to see OAPs dropping their purse at the bus stop....nor, bus drivers being attacked.

What she did did not delay her arrival at work either....
A bit of common courtesy and human kindness.

imlach - don't get me wrong I was not having a go at eclaire, she is right if I saw an old person quite obviously in distress then of course I would help them.

I was just trying to put the other side across as well when she mentioned about the guy on the bus and how she had to push through the suits to get to the bell, this sort of thing happens most mornings in one way or another but I tend to miss it due to my 'morning travel daze' thats all.

It reminds me of what I saw last week. Blind man with guide dog waiting at pedestrian crossing at Haymarket Station in Edinburgh...no aural indication of green man, so he remained stationary while green man came on.

About 50 people walked past him....before someone helped him across.

50 people blind to the situation. A disgrace.

I encounter selfish b'stards every day.

1) The non-disabled that park in disabled spaces
2) The person with no children who parks in mother&child spaces
3) The person who blocks the yellow grid on a traffic junction
4) The ar$e using the grrenway lane to skip the queue
5) inconsiderate parking on double yellows

etc

Thumbs up

Couldn't agree more with that list imlach.

And over the years, we've had attempts to justify each and every one of those actions....

FFS, even had another one last week. Petrol station queued back as busy. Empty pump at front as guy at pump behind still filling up. So, what does taxi behind us do? Goes to exit of petrol station and reverses in to empty pump therby blocking in person about to leave pump behind....

Therby causing more delay for us....

Got out car to challenge him and he said he was in a hurry so had every right.......called him selfish and he said, "aye, that's me".

ARGH! Ar$e

A lot of sentiments in this thread ring true to me, society has never been perfect but of late things seem to be getting worse, there seems to be a generation with a 'F*ck You' mentality, only interested in themselves and their own gratification, I suppose I am included in that, I like nice stuff but its just that, stuff and I value other things more highly than any of my stuff.

TV, Internet and the press present a lifestyle that people seem to think they need and other things like consideration, empathy and merely being polite have become unimportant. All that seems to be important is the aquistion of stuff, trolling round retail parks in a BMW on HP filled with Dairylea lunchable and Sunny Delight Addled toddlers prior to a slap up Harvester meal when the kids get to play in a sweaty sock fume filled room full of soft play stuff prior to aiming the BM past the less fortunates on the way back to the 'Executive' Barratt home to watch Sky TV and Play on the PS2/XBox etc.

Everything is so packaged and branded these days and its used as a yardstick of success, whatever happened to more esoteric ways to express yourself ?

As for helping your fellow man, there are those who will and those who worry that they may get fluff on their clothes.

I am not religous in any way but I do beleive that what goes around, comes around and to this end I do try to help and in a selfish way its more for me based on my belief and value system than the recipient. I try to perform at least one random act of kindness every week where I will put myself out for somebody else and do not expect something in return, if you do this when you really need help those you have helped in the past will be more inclined to come to your aid, and another plus is that there may be more than one person at your funeral.....

J4CKO,

With regards to the state of society, I couldn't agree more.

But you can own all these 'packaged' and 'branded' lives and still be in possesion of manners

To make matters worse, I was nearly mown down in the supermarket the other week by someone driving at around 40mph in the car park.

Gave him the bird, and he peeped at ME! He had 3 unrestrained kids in the back

I think yesterday will have to be the ultimate for me! Mind you, with the increase of foreigners in Edinburgh I expect to see a lot more of it!
