What I wanted to know was. Is it anything like this in real life? As I can't imagine, if it is, any car apart from the odd Enzo or Claren F1 rattling round here without constantly bouncing off the rev limiter in top.
To answer the original question, no, it's not much like the game IRL. It's a decent representation but not really based in reality. I think the game itself has an over optimistic representation of the level of grip available as it does the ability of the brakes. Also, unlike GT, there is a lot of discrepency between various models of car.

The track itself looks *like* the Ring but most of the cambers and bumps are missing. Also, you don't get much of a sense of the undulations and the bends are generally not sharp enough (this is made worse still by the previously mentioned over inflated ability of the tyres and brakes in the game). Most of the cars are also put off far too much by the curbs that you do use on the Ring and I also hate the fact that grass acts like treacle in this game when it should act more like ice.

Many of the lines you need to take to get a fast lap in the game would also probably get you killed IRL (as they are quite different) so the game is only really any good at giving you an idea of where the track goes. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be some Ring-newbie "PGR2 Driving Gods" who have some seriously scary moments and probably, some nasty crashes too come this Easter!!

Having said all that, racing on Xbox Live over the winter with friends who I only really get to see when at the Ring helps pass the winter "off" season

scared the **** out of me first time I drove the Nürburgring easter 2001!!! I felt safer racing home down the autobahn

It is no way flat there are hills and dips in it, the TV does not do it justice IMHO.

If you want a proper 'Ring simulation, get GP Legends on PC. It's most certainly not flat-out the whole way on that!!

Here is what Diesel and I have put together so far, we hope to finish it off this coming weekend.

Below are some screenshots showing some of the major features, they show you the amount of detail we have programmed into the video, all is updating in real time.

To the lower left is a reverse view image, above that is a lap timer, next up is the inclination of the road, then we have corner name and finally at the top is a scrolling circuit map that shows you where on the track you are. The map is oriented so upwards is always directly ahead, so as you take a corner the map follows your path and rotates. It zooms in and out on occasion to show you where in the full lap image you are and you have a flashing diamond on the maps to reference against when it does this.

On this particular lap we have produced some graphics that show you the main circuit features and in red the ideal racing line. As you drive the circuit the red hand to the right of the graphics follows where you are on track, so it’s pointing you to the exact corner the footage is showing. Top right is a map of the circuit, the red diamond follows your location and scrolls round the map, so again you can reference where on the circuit you are. You also have the corner names listed in the front wing area.

Hope you like it so far.

If it's not too late, may I suggest to swap the reverse view image and the map, so you get reverse view in the top left? That way it would naturally be like a rear-view mirror from the driver's viewpoint. (Assuming I understood reverse view correctly!)

Just a thought.

My first lap of the Ring was about 10.5 mins I did put it on Scoobynet some time back
This was more of a How not to do it video Even though I was taking it easy on first Lap I still had an off in the Fox hole.not sure of german name.

My lacking of inexperience in Track work, especially with Bikes on circuit was at fault.

I tried to give loads of room to overtake a Biker(who was easying up for me to overtake) but I went way off racing line, athough got around that corner I was too fast and on the wrong side of the road to make the next unseen hairpin. At least I only compromise myself and not a very vunerable Biker.

Actually Tony, you went off at Adenaur Forst Either your mate should have spoken faster or you should have been going slower (I would have recommended the latter, not the former! )

Matt,
Cheers ans as always good common sense which I always seem to lose as I put a crash hat on.

John f,
Your Video seems great really imformitive it would have been a god send prior to my first trip there As you say there are so many unsighted corners, but there were 6-7 places, like Adenaur Forst that are well worth driving with great caution. IMHO

LOL must have had my eyes closed for them, I should have said 50 bad and 6-7 very bad

Bedford,
Yes, bad brake fade and bad handling I found I had a lost/broken anti roll bar bolt so it was getting a pig to handle.

Do you know why you were getting fade? You shouldn't with the STi brakes.....have you got braided lines and decent fluid?

Check out the Skyline GTR DVD, excellent footage of the ring in Shin's Prospec 550bhp R34 GTR with Dirk Schoyman (sp?), unreal driving, speedo over 180mph in places, ar*e out at well over the ton and a wetlap, which is nice!.

Matt,
It was the first time I've ever had brake fade with the STi. My fault really, I wasn't driving smoothly and pads were credit card thickness. I've got braided and 4.1(I think)

Matt, you can get it online here from dvd plus, good service and you can check their stock, it only took 3 days to get to me, £11.97 (inc postage iirc).

It's the GTR story (don't know if you're interested in it?), worth having IMO, see Shin doing 200mph + on roads back through germany. Plus the lap of the ring with Dirk, talks through it too which is good. The best ring laps are in the extras, there is 2 full laps in the DVD extras section which is where he 'goes for it', most impressive. Worth £12 just to keep watching him drive.

Can be found here http://www.shopcreator.com/mall/dvdplus/frameset.cfm

Me too - it rocks! Better than the Derek Bell Porsche 956 vid for sure!

Matt

P.S. James, thanks
P.P.S. James, can't find it on that site. Is it the Duke Video GTR Story (i.e. this?)
