Whenever I think of Rolex, I think of the 80's with cheap fakes down the market, Delboy selling them usually. Fakes outnumber the real ones by quite a margin (at least they did then)
So now, whenever I see one I assume it's a fake. If I see an Omega I assume it's real. Maybe I'll think the same about Omega's in many years to come.
I prefer Omegas although I'm sure many people (probably myself included
) come to this conclusion just because of the James Bond connection. If he never wore one, I doubt half of use would have even battered an eyelid at one (that's if we'd even heard of them in the first place).
My Accurist is a fair few years old and is still going strong (one battery change last year, apart from that, none of this money-spinning servicing malarkey) and has a nice understatedness about it. i.e. looks respectable but certainly not flash and ostentatious.
Regardless, I'm not a jewellery person, most gold these days is a sign of council estate cheapness.

Hmmmm now who's talking crap.
My Airking date which is very subtle for a rolex (i agree the gold ones are tacky)cost £750 back in 1985 was valued last year (for which i have the certificate) for £1900.
Even including 2 services and a new face and being driven over by a humungous 8 ton Hymac (tracked digger)and picked out of the mud with almost No ill effects that equates to almost £60 a year increase in value.
Now find me a casio that does that and I will by a couple of thousand and make myself very rich.
Oh and by the way it keeps very good time but i run it a couple of minutes fast because it helps to stop me being late all the time

Do not fear Im here, just reading for the time being.
Autos dont work in a weightless envioroment(sp), hence the manual mechanical wind on the SpeedMaster(moon watch), also for health and safety reasons they were not allowed to use a glass face, so the plastic 'easy scratch' ones were fitted.
How much could I claim in compensation from Omega if I could prove that man never stepped foot on the moon? Therefore obviously he wasnt wearing my 'Moon' watch.

I think that Rolex like Ferrari's seem to be classed as bad taste or for @unts with to much cash etc. but IMO i think 99% of the people on this board would have either if they had the chance!
By the way was'nt the thread was called "What is it about Rolex's" not 'whats the best watch'
Anyway by my Rolex it nearly time for lunch!

My betterhalve's Omega seamaster (3/4 size) quartz, keeps better time than any of my auto's.
I used to argue that one day it will stop, when its battery expires.
She would say, yours stop 24hrs after you take them off. Every time you go to the safe for a fresh one, you have to reset the time and date, and then shake it for 5mins like a demented chimp!
What do you say to that?

I bought a good looking Seiko chronograph with moon phase in Hong Kong 20 years ago for £90. It is also a stop watch with timing to 0.05 second. It is going perfectly still and has only needed two replacement batteries in that time.
I set the moon phase over Bahrein on the way back and it is still right!
I think it was a bargain.

It's jewellery for the lads! Girls have their rings & necklaces, brooches earings & all that. We make the excuse that ours is for telling the time - very accurately, under water - on the moon whatever it happens to be. BUT at the end of the day an expensive watch is mainly a piece of jewellery with a more manly slant.
I never used to be interested in watches that I thought people were wasting hundreds of £s on. I went to Thailand and bought a Rolex Submariner and a Colt Ocean something or other - as a joke really.
The timekeeping of the Rolex is poor enough that it might be genuine (if not I was done for £20 ) the gold is thinning rapidly, but now I think it is a nice watch and wear it all the time - mainly due to it being auto and not having to worry about the battery running out - I absolutely could not believe that the price of a 'real' one is £3800! Mind blowing - but I guess jewelery... wearing real diamonds instead of fakes!

Sorry NARCO but i've got a Rolex and im no MUG or WANNABE!
But something to think about maybe is you don't fancy spending a few grand on a watch because of image etc, so why the hell have you spent many more thousands on a Scooby? So you can think that your a rally driver? or maybe you fancy yourself as a badboy racer of even a drug dealing pimp?

I've had a Rolex for the past 13 years, and although the timekeeping is questionable the build quality is exceptional. The reason I bought it was because a.) I would never have to buy another watch again. Ever. b.) wherever I am in the world, if I am suddenly skint, I can pop my Rolex for few G's : like a wrist-mounted overdraft.
I couldn't give a flying toss about the status symbol side of it, and would rather people think it was a fake. I buy my underwear in Matalan, btw

I spent about the price of 2 ostentatious wristwatches on my old nail and I bought it because I need an AWD estate as I live in the middle of a mountain range. I have nothing but disdain for the huge spoiler, outsize gold wheels, expensive showy wristwatch brigade.

The reality is they are no longer a wealth status because they are too cheap, consequently they are within reach of your average individual keen on being thought as wealthy.
Follow most of the owners home and you will realise it either won't be long before their watch is a lot number in a government auction due to the laws on asset stripping.

Chill out Nacro.
My rolex watch gets me virtualy NO attention as know one even realises what it is.
It was bought for me as a highly treasured 21st birthday present by my Father and i too until recently drove a MY99 Turbo wagon now i drive a new prodrive Impreza wagon because it gets little or no attention either.
Oh and i also have a cheap casio for when i am doing DIY

I am chilled out dude.......perhaps the only people who get upset about those sorts of comments are the ones they apply to?
In any case I have some nice watches myself. My favourite is an original 70's Texas Instruments LED digital. Never really wear them though as I have no need of time keeping.

I have no problems with someone's possesion of a luxury item if it is (primarily) for their own gratification. If someone uses such an item to base their personna on, then that is a little sad.
Some definitions of luxury:
1: something that is an indulgence rather than a necessity
2: the quality possessed by something that is excessively expensive
3: wealth as evidenced by sumptuous living

None-I don't have a problem with any luxury item, in fact I don't have a problem with people who like to wear ostentatious watches either, just thought I'd point out some conclusions others may draw when seeing a typical wearer- especially a blue collar worker.
