BTW, I don't have a problem with Ferraris, the current ones are lovely cars. Absolutely not worth the money to buy or keep though. Given the choice between having Ferraris and needing a job, or no Ferraris and not needing a job, I'll keep driving my WRX thankyouverymuch.

Maybe it bothers me as a taxpayer? People **** and moan about, for example, the $1K/month it costs for child care, and expect the State to give them taxbreaks to cover this, while dropping $5K on a watch. And my retirment fund is too small - help me out government. Bwah wah wah. Excuse me?

Obviously this opinion but to me a Rolex watch is like a Bose hi-fi, marketed well to mugs who'd be better off with a Rotel or something. And stylistically I think gaudy watches are the fashion of equivalent of driving around with your front fogs on

Yes i work very hard but im not trapped (i work for myself and work as much or as little as i like), i am very lucky in that i enjoy my work!!!

The fact that gives me the opportunity to buy (what i consider!!!) the finer things in life (IMHO!!!) and still have a good social life, i consider myself very lucky! I understand people think that Rolex watches are tacky but IMHO (being a designer) think there a classic like the VW BUG, iMac, coke bottle, E-Type Jag etc. and you can't buy that no matter how much money you have (or are willing to spend!).

It makes me laugh to read people slating spending a few grand on a watch when half of them probably give that much to the thieving insurance companies to ensure their scoob and get nothing for it!

I get married on Saturday and shall be saying goodbye to my trusty 13 year old Seiko Sports 150 Chronograph (It's a pilots watch and I never did buy that plane!) and hello to my TAG Monza Calibre 36. (I did get a car) I think it's beautiful, it cost a packet and it will hopefully last the rest of my life.

I bought my Seiko after saving up part-time job money as a 16 year old. It was £300 which was lots of saving then!

I still look at it and think it is a really good looking watch.
It also has lots of memories, scratches that were caused by too much drink and good nights out etc which make me smile now but I wasn't happy when I did it!

To some people a watch is just a watch but mine is memories too which I hope my new watch will give me too.

My original point was why is Rolex alone in virtually the whole retail world in being able to charge the same/or even more for secondhand goods than new.
And as i pointed out before,its not a case of actual supply and demand,more a case of percieved supply and demand.

Is that not the greatest marketing ploy ever,to think something is hard to come by when its not.

Have to say I can't quite see the link between mortgages and owning a Rolex but at least he isn't singing from the same song sheet as the rest of you. After all Rolex watches are pretty tacky baubles, sort of remind me of old Maseratis (like the biturbo)in a way, basically crap but people who want to show off their limited wealth like to own them.

I think what Gareth is trying to say is that, in his opinion, people should clear their debts rather than increase them on baubles. Very laudable, but how many people do that? Look at the personal debt figures for this country and it's quite horrifying the level of debt supported by each person. Maybe he has been caught out with it in the past and is now trying to protect people from themselves, rather like a reformed smoker or recovering alcoholic?

As to the initial question, 'tis wierd how they've managed to pull it off. I almost bought an explorer 2, but shied away at the last moment purely due to what I percieve Rolex wearers to be like. So I bought a Breitling. Biggest waste of money I've come across! [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] In terms of expense for something which doesn't work, it's second only to my wife!

Rolex watches seem to appeal to people who like to show off the fact they have some money. Whenever I've mixed with the truly wealthy they don't seem to feel the need. However a plumber/builder from say Essex do seem to feel the need.
