yes i have a mortgage and a Rolex and i also work very hard to pay for the things i like
The point is, you are trapping yourself in your 'very hard work' job and mortgage by spending money on overpriced watches. But at least you can calculate how many hours you spend commuting and stuck in the office on a guady watch, eh?
BTW, I don't have a problem with Ferraris, the current ones are lovely cars. Absolutely not worth the money to buy or keep though. Given the choice between having Ferraris and needing a job, or no Ferraris and not needing a job, I'll keep driving my WRX thankyouverymuch.

Why does this trouble you so, Gareth?
Surely it's up to each individual what's "worth" their money, and what isn't? Over-priced is a matter of opinion, not fact.
Methinks there's more to your opinion than meets the eye...

Over-priced if they don't keep time as well as a $300 Seiko, wouldn't you say?
Maybe it bothers me as a taxpayer? People **** and moan about, for example, the $1K/month it costs for child care, and expect the State to give them taxbreaks to cover this, while dropping $5K on a watch. And my retirment fund is too small - help me out government. Bwah wah wah. Excuse me?
Maybe it's because around here I've seen so many weathly people fall on their **** in the past two years? They were wealthy, right? Expensive watches, expensive houses, bitchin' SUVs. Living paycheck to paycheck to fund their 'stuff' we now know. I'll be paying their unemployment benefits too, then
Obviously this opinion but to me a Rolex watch is like a Bose hi-fi, marketed well to mugs who'd be better off with a Rotel or something. And stylistically I think gaudy watches are the fashion of equivalent of driving around with your front fogs on

Quote of the thread: "When you can afford a Rolex, you don't need to be on time.."
Anyway, Ive always wanted a Rolex, and I quite like the look of yachtmaster (white dial) or submariner (blue dial)bi metal bracelet. Seeing as somebody has posted up about the online 'unofficial' dealers making a bit of a killing, has anyone got some links to 'official' dealers?
And I have a big wing on the back of my Impreza and gold wheels, i suppose if i get a Rolex ill complete the 'wanka' image

Yes i work very hard but im not trapped (i work for myself and work as much or as little as i like), i am very lucky in that i enjoy my work!!!
The fact that gives me the opportunity to buy (what i consider!!!) the finer things in life (IMHO!!!) and still have a good social life, i consider myself very lucky! I understand people think that Rolex watches are tacky but IMHO (being a designer) think there a classic like the VW BUG, iMac, coke bottle, E-Type Jag etc. and you can't buy that no matter how much money you have (or are willing to spend!).

...and let this be a lesson to all of us - pay off your mortgages first before considering any non-essential purchases!
(Damn - there goes the car, the watch, the TV, the DVD, the stereo, the PS2, the new ski gear and so on....)
You sound like my dad
Prefer Breitlings for that "watch is way too big - he must be compensating for something" effect...

It makes me laugh to read people slating spending a few grand on a watch when half of them probably give that much to the thieving insurance companies to ensure their scoob and get nothing for it!
I get married on Saturday and shall be saying goodbye to my trusty 13 year old Seiko Sports 150 Chronograph (It's a pilots watch and I never did buy that plane!) and hello to my TAG Monza Calibre 36. (I did get a car) I think it's beautiful, it cost a packet and it will hopefully last the rest of my life.
I bought my Seiko after saving up part-time job money as a 16 year old. It was £300 which was lots of saving then!
I still look at it and think it is a really good looking watch.
It also has lots of memories, scratches that were caused by too much drink and good nights out etc which make me smile now but I wasn't happy when I did it!
To some people a watch is just a watch but mine is memories too which I hope my new watch will give me too.
Sad ******* Phil

What *i'd* like to know is WTF have outstanding mortgage payments got to do with somebody's decision to buy a Rolex? For the life of me, i really cannot see the association. Anyone??

I think Gareth must have an incredibly small *****.
Or an incredibly low IQ.
Certainly has some serious hangups..LOL...
No wonder the whole world (or certainly the larger percentage of it) hates America

My original point was why is Rolex alone in virtually the whole retail world in being able to charge the same/or even more for secondhand goods than new.
And as i pointed out before, its not a case of actual supply and demand, more a case of percieved supply and demand.
Is that not the greatest marketing ploy ever,to think something is hard to come by when its not.

Gareth is from the UK judging by his previous posts, as for questioning his ***** size, pretty pathetic don't you think?
Have to say I can't quite see the link between mortgages and owning a Rolex but at least he isn't singing from the same song sheet as the rest of you. After all Rolex watches are pretty tacky baubles, sort of remind me of old Maseratis (like the biturbo)in a way, basically crap but people who want to show off their limited wealth like to own them.

PAthetic - perhaps, but no more pathetic than continually stating a position with nothing to substantiate it other than what you personally think.
And we have seen plenty of posts from you suggesting your opinion isn't worth reading, to be honest.
It seems to me that those making the most effort on this thread are those that seek to force their opinion that Rolex are simpy overpriced crap used soley as status symbols.
Without any apparent justification
A choice of watch sould be no different to a choice of car. After all, a Ford fiesta does the same job as a £150 k Bently.
And as for the obsession about mortages, what the **** is that all about?
Gareth appears to have some serious issues, whereas your persona is that of an insecure little boy alluding (wrightly or wrongly - and to be honest who cares) to wealth. Its like inverse snobbery with you.

I think what Gareth is trying to say is that, in his opinion, people should clear their debts rather than increase them on baubles. Very laudable, but how many people do that? Look at the personal debt figures for this country and it's quite horrifying the level of debt supported by each person. Maybe he has been caught out with it in the past and is now trying to protect people from themselves, rather like a reformed smoker or recovering alcoholic?
As to the initial question, 'tis wierd how they've managed to pull it off. I almost bought an explorer 2, but shied away at the last moment purely due to what I percieve Rolex wearers to be like. So I bought a Breitling. Biggest waste of money I've come across! In terms of expense for something which doesn't work, it's second only to my wife!

Limited wealth=you still have to work.
Rolex watches seem to appeal to people who like to show off the fact they have some money. Whenever I've mixed with the truly wealthy they don't seem to feel the need. However a plumber/builder from say Essex do seem to feel the need.
What I find amusing are statements like this "perhaps, but no more pathetic than continually stating a position with nothing to substantiate it other than what you personally think."
That's all any of us can do on this thread or any other- unless we are talking about pure data of course. I wouldn't waste time insulting someone's manhood unlike you diablo, it's truly not worthy of you or anyone else. Grow up. I can see why you are a failed moderator looking at the quality of your postings/arguments.
This thread is a bit of fun, the Rolex wearers/defenders should be interested in what other people think rather than trying to stifle them.

But of course, I forgot.
Narco is your alter ego, isn't it? You post under a different name as well.
Now that really is sad......afraid to put your cards on the table without the alter ego.
