quote: "So nobody still working is justified in buying a luxurious possession, NACRO?
You *really* believe that"
No I don't and I haven't said that. Anyone is justified in buying whatever they please. However other people may draw certain conclusions from their choice, wrongly or rightly. I don't begrudge anyone owning or buying a Rolex whatever they do, it's more that the brand seems to appeal to a certain type who are desperate to show what they've got. I tend to think it shows the exact opposite.

I think anybody should buy whatever they please and can afford-they should also be aware that it has certain connotations that may not be those they associated with the object.
Pretty simple really and I can't understand why people object to hearing about someone elses perception of an object they own.

Tel, I think it's all about the number of luxurious possessions that people feel the need to buy. It's like kids in a playground that have to have the right brand of trainers, the right mobile 'phone etc. What the others are trying to say, I think, is that in a lot of cases its a facade and that some of the people withthese trappings of "wealth" are hocked to the eyeballs to maintain the illusion.
I'm of the opinion that if people are working, how they spend that money is up to them. Hey, if someone wants to spent a couple of K on speaker cable, all power to their elbow.
With the Rolex it's a taste thing. Yes, they seem well crafted and they do (in some circle) have the "I've made it" cache. To my mind they are ostentatious and no, I wouldn't have one.

i used to have a TVR S3 - it was pretty much a dog of a car in many respects, and it was only worth a few grand, but it *was* red, soft top, and cream leather inside. i regularly used to get the knuckle shuffle from guys in vans and so on - i suspect that they had no idea what the car was, just saw me as a playboy in a sports car when it couldn't really have been further from the truth...

OK why does'nt everyone list some items they think are over-the-top which they own! Everyone must have gone "oh sod it!" once or twice?
Could make it interesting?

For Nacro. As I own a £2K watch I thought I'd reply.
M3 drivers are usually drug dealers, gangsters or pimps. BMW's, especially M3's have serious brand connotations usually associated with wanksh@fts and dick*eads who want people to think they have made it. You seem to fit the latter description.

I think they look great and tell everyone that you are a man to be reckoned with.
I am sure that if you get one, everyone on the estate will be well impressed

Anyway, any links to 'official' dealers? This seems to have been lost in all the mud slinging.

Official dealers...well http://www.goldsmiths.co.uk/ is one
The blue faced bi-metal strapped puppies you said you liked are readily available through them these days...seen them at Canary Wharf and Bluewater branches. Also the Yatchmaster's are everywhere. Daytona's they stock are the gold ones..so between £5.5 and £10k list.

I bought my GMT11 because my Omega Seamaster kept filling up with water!
But Omega did replace all the internals free, but it sits in the box in the drawer, no water in there . ....

I'd not buy a Rolex, but not because it's expensive (I've no problem with people having pricy kit), more because they seem overly flash and have a whiff of the desperately aspirational about them. I'm prepared to admit that they're fine bits of machinery, if not quite as good as legend would have it, but they just don't appeal.
In the same way that I'd rather buy an old bottle of Port Ellen than a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label, I'd have a Zenith or an IWC over a Rolex. It would be something I'd enjoy more and would be less obvious; it would take one of the cognoscenti to either notice or appreciate it, though the cost would be very similar.
My day to day watch is an old Omega Moonwatch - 1973 and going strong, albeit battered and scraped. To my mind this has far more about it than a shiny new Rolex of any sort, though at this price level it's all about subjectivity.

Reason as i mentioned official dealers, was that earlier on it was mentioned that an official dealer had a watch on sale cheaper than used internet places. Believe me, I have no wish to pay over the odds for anything
Thanks for the responses.

I can understand that 289 - Rolex does bear the brunt of the criticism in the watch world. Some of it i can understand, some of it i think is criticism for criticism's sake, ie perpetuating the object of derision bandwagon. To me, Breitlings are the epitomy of "unnecessary-ness" (TelBoy word), in that very very few people ever really need all those dials, but it's all a question of personal taste. And *nothing* to do with mortgages or benefit payments or whatever else it is we've had mentioned here!!

You can certainly get bargains on other brands no problem, my CapeLand S 8220 £3 375.00 RRP on watches UK, their price Price: £2 700.00. Compared to Blitz who have it at £2,900.00 RRP, with their price being £2,175.00. Anyway thank goodness for choices in life. My BMW comments were an example of why we shouldnt always put labels on things of course

We all know that you shouldn't label someone because of the watch they wear, car they drive, house they live in. The point is some people do pigeonhole people because of that and in the case of the Rolex watch the category they are put into is not a good one.
What is so wrong about highlighting that fact?

I'd always prefer to buy a Rolex from an official dealer for two reasons..
1.A guarantee against fakes, and there are loads of very good ones around.
2.When it comes to Rolex there really are no bargains to be had, only maybe privately.
Personally i dont own a Rolex, partly because they are quite expensive but secondly because i think in some respects they are quite ugly.Rolex make no effort at all to accomadate different tastes.
Its a case of take it or leave it.
