These type of watches aren't bought for their immaculate timekeeping, even though you've proved that some people here do think theirs keep good time. Mine i'd class as "average". If you wanted to know the exact time, you'd buy a digital Casio.

Rolexes are bought for the enjoyment of ownership, the craftsmanship, the feel of quality, those sorts of things. And no amount of bollox about paycheck to paycheck can deny anybody those pleasures.

We only live once, remember.

I agree totally tel, you'll find I haven't seriously suggested that anyone here shouldn't have a Rolex if they want one. I just questioned their motives that's all. I've been gifted a couple of nice watches and although I like them don't really wear them very much as I feel they smack of trying too hard.

The quality point is a good one, after all a Spec C Impreza is reckoned to be as quick as a GT3 on track, but which one would you rather own and drive?

Perception is a very personal thing. As i've mentioned, i do know what you mean - if any watch is subject to negative sentiment, Rolexes are it. I doubt if that will change anytime soon.

Love my Rolex. Love the Gucci I got for my 18th birthday. Love the Casio I bought in a scool camping trip in Swanage in 1986.
Watch that gets the most attention from chicks? Marvin the Martian warner brothers job that opens the cockpit to tell time
I worked damn hard to be in a position to be able to ignore reality And now I fully intend to enjoy it.

Thats pretty sad Nacro..

Just how self concious and wrapped up are you in projecting the right image?

If you like them, you should wear them and not give a bollox to what other people think.

Live your own life dude..

Cool

I buy what I want based on several criteria:

- What I can afford
- What I'm willing to pay
- How much I want the item in question

Pretty simple.

Sometimes it's nice if someone else has the same taste and compliments what you have - be it a car or a watch or whatever - but if they don't, then no problem everyone's different.

Bottom line - the things I buy for myself, I buy for me to enjoy, not for anyone else.

How hard is that to grasp?
(LOL - I suppose by posting and giving this justification, I'm going to be labeled in the sadly aspirational and pretentious category )

Anyway, who really cares...

Rich

PS I really like fine watches, though not a big fan of Rolex.
I'm less of a fan of those that pass judgement without substance.

I just don't like wearing the watches- one is a actually a 60's Rolex, the other a Breitling that I don't wear largely because of it's sentimental value. I have a few other I've collected over the years my favourite being an original TI LED digital worth about 50p.

I don't wear the Rolex/Breitling for similar reasons that I wouldn't wear a set of deeley boppers- they look crap.

Not really it belonged to my father who kept it up his *** throughout the vietnam war to stop the gooks getting it............

only kidding, I wouldn't be interested in selling it really can't be bothered with the hassle. I did consider it once when I was skint- it was valued at £1270 in the early 90's, does anyone know of a good site to get current valuations- it's an Oyster with date still in its wooden box and needs a service.

Hassle of being identified for one, I value my anonymity, I'd flog it through ebay if I needed the cash. Plus I don't want to sell it, I'd rather keep hold of it for a rainy day.

I don't think that a vintage watch falls into the category of aspirational, it's a piece of design history. You'll note I didn't say it was crap either, it just doesn't work very well. According to you neither do the modern ones.

No I don't UB, however I am aware that there seem to be a lot of lunatics using the internet (like you for one ) so I say being circumspect is the best defence.

However it does seem to be the case that some people are very interested in what I say, perhaps because I've wound them up? Look at your comment here for evidence of that assertion.

Isnt "who gives a flying ****" just a 'saying' and doesnt imply that he's wound up by you - although I'm sure it wouldnt take much of the "NACRO humour" to actually do so

Last comment as this is being dragged of topic, I wasn't implying that UB was wound up, just that he obviously has an interest or he wouldn't have bothered commenting.

I like Uncle Buck a lot and would NEVER be disrepectful to him, he's one of the fruitcakes that makes this place so endlessly interesting.

edited because it didn't make any sense.

Talking

Just an observation. My primary motive for posting on here for a bit of fun and the occasional bit of controversy. A lot of people seem to take it and themselves overly seriously IMO

UB

Edit to add that of course SN is a damn fine resource for the more serious business of keeping Scoobs and bikes on the road.
