Wibe nobody is saying a 0-60 in sub 6 seconds car is slow, the problem is all I've ever seen are standard models (I presume) which I have easily beaten in my old Impreza.

I'm sure with the right modifications the BMW 3.0 Diesel engine is capable of some impressive speed, the stock time of a 330D is more like 7 seconds though isn't it?

thats a fair point duckpond,
but the M3 engine is at its starting point in standard form, wear as mines pretty much up there,
the company who remapped mine do M3s also,
M3 standard from 340 to 372bhp and thats just the basic remap,
loads more room to manuvere in M3s engine

I like em NAC.

They make good, funny reading. It's nice to see people getting wound up over something so meaningless.

Question

interesting.........why didn't BMW get more out of the CSL if those figures are correct. I thought the M3 lump was maxxed out in terms of development.

I read they reached the safe limit with the CSL and any more power would have brought reliability issues.

...it is, WISE man doesn't know what he's talking about (clearly, as he thinks his derv guzzler is properly quick and a new M3 has loads of scope for performance enhancements - even though it's already over 100bhp/litre and naturally aspirated). Yes you can get a BIT more from an M3, but the engine will be outside tollerances and won't last long. Hence, the next M3 will have a all-new engine, although probably still 6 cylinder due to weight.

The latest M3 in CSL guise has a cardboard boot-lining, presumably to reduce weight. Makes you wonder what will be sacrificed when the next generation M3 arrives with a bigger, heavier engine...

Maybe go down the Mac F1 route with the ultra-light wheels etc? If so, it'll be interesting so see how it is priced.

Oh, and don't get me wrong - I like the 330i and 330d. Unfortunately for them, like the TT, their sales success means they're all too common!

so the race you asked for is off then? Ho ho.

"DMS are a reputable company who advertise in all BMWS mags,
autocar, topgear etc," - so what - the responsiblity is yours once they've pushed an M3 over the limit - no warranty and a limited engine life - that was my point.

nasty comments re brain tumor. no comment.

"if you were going off your own knowledge you wouldnt be arguing the toss you would know how good the car is and respect it for that instead of slatting it and calling it an oil burner,"...

it is an oil burner. I never slated it - it's a good car. It's just not as quick you continually go on about (as do other DERV bores). It's common (as are all 3-series beemers now). It's boring. It's uninspiring. It's diesel.

"sti8 super car,
super guzzler,
super residuals,
super plastics,
i thought cars were suppose to evolve not get slower"

STI8PPP slower than which previous std. uk impreza precisely? If it is, then it's only 10ths, and I'd happily sacrifice that for a new car with a good safety record.

And as for the number of posts...well, I enjoy winding you up and it's time well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Wibes,

Not sure about your Burnsie comment, but I'd be happy to meet up and discuss the 330d with you if you're about. Mine is still std 204 bhp but could be tempted to upgrade. I work in Cov, so not too far from you.

Nacro,

I take onboard the commments about being in the right gear at the right speed etc. I'm sure that a 330i or 330d would happily stick with a standard WRX from about 40 onwards through the gears, but I suspect that an STI would be considerably quicker.

I'd also like to see how much transmission loss was a factor. My STI 5 gave 261 bhp and 189 at the wheels. I bet my 330 doesn't have much less at the wheels now. Will have to find out one day once it's fully run in.

Earlier on someone said that the 330 was heavy. It's not that heavy, and certainly not much more than a WRX. I'd be surprised if there was more that 50-100kg in it.

Matt

Wibes - I've owened a 330ci and driven a 330d pool car for 1 month, and a mates M3 for 1 week prior to getting the scooby. So although the 330d is not the same as your souped up version, I reckon I know what I'm talking about.

Cool

There's a word for people who buy your type of car. Dullards.

As for depreciation - I'm more than happy to pay for the performance, significantly greater than yours as it is. Most of my journeys are short and on b-roads - I don't give a monkeys about filling up more frequently.

If I'd wanted a car that depreciated slowly, I'd have bought one. But I wanted a fast scooby instead. Please don't feel smug for buying a derv guzzler - you just made the opposite choice to me.

As I said before - go and discuss fuel economy elsewhere matey, it's really of no interest here, nor are folk who think their sensible buy is actually a performance car. Yawn. I'm singing off this thread.

Thumbs down

quote: "go the whole hog and get the brain tuma and go and annoy someone else"

That really sucks, I'm prime candidate for a wind up but commenting on RB's tumour like that is just ******* sick. I hope you aren't ever in that position yourself. It's not a matter for jocularity whatever you feel the provocation might be. You sick ******.

Just thought I'd add land's end to john o groats is about 900 miles you not 500, you obviously haven't driven it.

So, so funny. Our dear friend Wibes gets equally offensive in this thread too. What I find most interesting is he wanted to sell the Beemer and buy an STI - priceless.

Geez, how these threads do go off topic....

Anyhow, I had a MY01 330i sport for 18 months (thought I'd have a change from the Jap scene).

They are a different breed of car. Very smooth, silky and very comfortable too. But after a while I did find the drive boring because as a driver you didn't seem to have too much involvement with the car. I had the steptronic gears and these were great. Kick down was amazing. Yes the car is quick, but it is certainly not warp speed. MPG wasn't that good either. It would only average around 24/25mpg.

Got rid of it in the end because the 3 series is everywhere now and becoming the Vectra/Mondeo of the rep world. The other thing was that there is nothing to distinquish a 318 from a 330. They all look the same. I had M3 mirrors on mine and some Reiger bumpers too, just to be different. Handling was OK, but not up to the previous 4 wheel drive cars I had before.

In the end I was aching to get back into a scoob, so I went to my local Subaru dealer and had a test drive in a STi7. Wow, what a difference. Did the deal on the spot and haven't looked back since.

My STi7 PPP again is a different breed from the BMW's.

However, in terms of performance there is no comparison. The beemer was quick, but the STi is rapid.

MPG is better on my STi too. Get around 25/26 combined. A minor difference, but better.

+ scoobs aren't everywhere like 3 series....& I like that.

As for the diesels, yes they are nippy and certainly require you to change down to take them, but again still no match.

Cheers !

...oh and you were selling a 34K car (according to you) for 21K, 1 yr old. Now what were you saying about depreciation? My STI with PPP, 18" alloys & sills cost 27K new, will probably get 10k in 3 yrs time, being realistic). 17K lost, to your 13K in 1 yr.

You are one bull*hit merchant matey. You're full of it...and it's been a pleasure winding you up!

Wibes - just admit you've been rumbled!

..read the whole thread - either you're a complete liar now, or you were then. Which are we to believe? I suggest it was yours matey.

(for example, you said "cheers for the comments mate, am i mad selling, it is a crackin motor, first car in a long time i havent been bored with after 2 days!!!!and its diesel for gods sake!!!)

I reckon you couldn't sell it last month, so you've had it tweaked in some vain attempt to get performance close to the car of your dreams - an STI8.

As I said, priceless.

You are one person not to be trusted.
