AndyBrew, a straight ban is not necessarily the worst thing in the world, provided it is for a single speeding offence on a motorway etc. Happened to me a couple of years back, no real problem for me to get insurance, cost me 150 quid extra I think.
A ban if you lose your license because of the totting up rules (12+ points in 3 years) is much worse. So if one's on 6+ points and gets caught doing say 101mph on a motorway, best to take a straight ban (4-6 weeks) than argue for points and get 6-12 months ban under totting up rules!
Also after a straight ban for a single speeding offence you get your license back with 0 points.

[holier than thou mode on]
People like you make me sick. how inconsiderate of you. what would you have done if you had of killed someone. i hope you get banned and a massive fine.
[/holier than thou mode off]
sorry to hear that m8, guess i have just been lucky. got stopped a few years back buy normal plod car who caught 2 of us racing on a dual carriage way. plod went thru me for a shortcut but i got the feeling he couldnt be ar$ed writing it up, so he let us off with a stern warning. if it was today i am sure i would be in your shoes, i.e. look at a ban. northern ireland has an appaling road traffic accident record and they are coming down hard on speeders. hope it goes ok for ya. you just feel sick when it happens.
cheers

Current ACPO guidelines are:
Over 30 mp/h indicated speed limit =
5-6 Points, or discressionary ban of up to 56 days.
and/or a level 5 fine of up to £1000 (double for motorway offense)
+ court fees
But, these are just guidelines!
Depends very much on time of day, traffic, road conditions, weather, your driving style etc to how far the mags will take it.
If you've got aggrivated circumstances for the speeding then hopefully you might get off with just a fine and points. I would expect atlest 14 days ban if i was you.
You'll get a chance to pleed guilty by post, it's up to the mags pre-trial hearing whether or not you have to attend court.
I'm doing some IS work for a well know insurance company. Having spoken to somebody about this they said points are ok if you get an SP50 as your first offence, a ban and they will not touch you with a barge-pole!
