FWIW, 'Training WRX' likens the effect of running without a dump valve on the turbo to the hammer effect you get in water pipes if you shut the tap too quickly, which I think is a very good illustration. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that a dump valve is not really necessary if you have more than 300bhp but I can't remember why.

I would guess that a front mount creates more of a buffer between the throttle body and the turbo (longer run). With this in mind, wouldn't running without the dump valve be safer?

And what are the likely effects on a std turbo suddenly stalling? Not good I bet.
I would've thought your turbo (unless specifically prepared) would last a matter of days..........

i think stef could probably run with out the dump valve if he wants it on the current turbo. the TD Turbos are quite a strong and the TD04L that stef is running should withstand the extra stress. however it is a big no no if you are running one of the VF series as they are not as strong .
a friend of mine has been running with out the dump valve on his evo vi for quite a while now in conjucntion with Motec ECU, with no problems. the EVO VI uses a TD05... turbos.

I should have made the point, that when I said running without the dump valve should be safer, I meant safer when using a front mount than when using a top mount.
Pat runs with no dump valve at the mo, his very interesting turbo however, is based on a TD05, which sam says is stronger.
I have a vf series, so perhaps it is not a good idea for me. May be worth asking branko or bob rawle if they think the vf series can last.
But then again, is it really worth it?
Little invention, but why jot have a charge canister that charges up from the turbo when boost is otherwise being wasted such as at cruise. Use the standard dumpvalve to waste the boost, when the throttle is closed, and dump the charge from the canister into the throttle body when it is required. A kind of antilag system?
It cant be possible else it would have been done by the wrc, can someone tell me why?

unfortuantely the VF series are one of the weakest turbos around. but the are the cheapest as well .
i remember one night when i was bored i picked up the phone and spoke to APS in OZ for a long chat about wht they do to their cars in OZZY land. and the said the first thing you should do when you fit a VF23 turbo ( mine) is you should get a stronger dump valve as the turbo is very weak. they have recommended that i should get the Garret as they are more robust.

Won dont you speak to brd about the prospect of a hybrid ihi with strengthened internals?
another thing, getting a stronger dump valve such as the forge (which I have on my vf23) means that the internal spring is stronger thereby resisting the manifold vacuum that causes it to open.
Surely this means that a stronger dump valve will open less often than a weaker one and as such will protect the turbo even less?

i have no doubt that the hybrid turbos from BRD are the dog danglies of turbos but they are quite expensive as i have bought my turbo VF23 brand new. if i have bought a cheap second hand one and then uprate it then it will be fine. but just know i can't justify uprating my turbo which is fine for the boost it is going to run 1.3-1.4 bar on a UK car. if the engine blow up or the turbo packs it in then it is a different story all together

i am really not sure as this was not the main topic of the conversation i had with APS an intercooler was.
but you have got a point there. maybe the weeker oem dump valve leaks at high boost/rpm so the turbo works harder kind of thing. i am not sure either. one thing though i am on my second oem dump valve.
but again the 22B probably comes with the same d/v as my MY99 and it runs the same turbo as mine and it seem to be coping.
maybe he wanted me to buy one ?

that is a possibility sam.
i do indeed have a standard dump valve, regardless of turbo flow, it is the peak pressure that will blow a leaky dump valve open and cause it to leak boost. not sure if the jecs allows the ihi turbos to run to higher peak. I know my car over boosts to 1.25 bar, have no idea what it holds.
incidentally mine was opening too soon, so I now have a forge item.

hi all.
if the dump valve is too small for the amount of air in the system i.e. the amount of air the turbo produces then it will not be able to release the air from the system fast enough causing back pressure and loading the turbo , a leaking dv will only cause loss of power.
