BH my comments were meant tongue in cheek hence my smilies. No offence was intended to you personally.
I know the more expensive shirts can be more comfortable etc, I just have experienced first hand the snobbery of lots of city folk who think you should be measured on how much you spend on your appearance.
Being in IT you especially get treated like dirt and looked down upon. Thats ok though because I just fek with their pcs even more if they give me attitude
And I have a particular dislike for traders - especially ex pit traders
Their arrogance is second to none!

Never really liked Pink shirts - agree with your comments re: their durability. TM Lewin can be very good if you get to their Jermyn Street store during a sale (every other week), and get one of their Royal or Luxury ranges at stupid discounts.
Not really any fancy prints, but very nice white or blue cotton twill that lasts forever, feels fantastic and looks great. Some other nice checked patterns / stripes if you're looking for that too.
Other than that, Hawkes and Curtis shirts are classicly styled and not too much more expensive.
I used to use a shirt maker in Fulham who would make-to-measure in your choice of materials for a very reasonable price - I'll check their name if you're interested.
Cheers,
Alex

Charles Tyrwhit (spelling?) - order online, you choose the size/style (even pockets if you like
)
avoid the garish colours (yellow/ green) and stick to the blues etc you'll be fine (their bright colours look ok on-line and in their catalogues but are much brighter when they turn up!)

Another vote for Charles Tyrwhitt - cost a bit more than M + S etc but are better made, look better and last longer.

I too stopped buying Pink shirts because the quality went downhill. Bought five Lewin city shirts in the Lime St EC3 branch today - half price at £29.50, and I just throw them away more frequently at that price

Just read page 2 - there's something nice about wearing a crisp 100% cotton shirt under your suit, rather than some poly cotton skanky thing off Romford market
It isn't to impress others, it's to feel good yourself ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Rolex? Nah, too pretentious - Tag Heuer F1 and Omega Speedmaster Professional for me - mind you, I do have four Mont Blancs (but no shirt pocket to put them in![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
)

I thank you all in a non-arrogant up my **** way...
The Haines and Bonner shirts (on I bought look v nice and fit well, and they've got a half price sale on as well (Threadneedle St, £35 instead of £70, woo-hoo!). In fact have you ever known TM Lewin NOT to have a half price sale? Anyone who's ever bought a shirt there at full price must be a right plonker.
I'm wearing Charles Trywhitt today - its lasted v well this one.
Alex - Marc Wallace (Hurlinham) are in Fulham - their shirt a really nice and are tailored, cost £75, but the quality and fit is great. Long way from Essex tho....

I have to say Lewin and Thyrwit seem to last the longest. Got an M&S one on today and when I was ironing it last night, I notice one of the cuffs is fraying on the fold and it's less than a year old! Oh and all the M&S ones seem to have pockets on :-(
My favourite shirt is an Aquascutum one! Lovely quality cotton, irons really well and seems to go on and on.

Where do you work Bravo? Wouldn't be Flemings (as was?) by any chance?
I did some consultancy for them (IT related) and the traders I met were the some of the worst in the city IMHO- professionally and personally. To paraphrase from a source I shouldn't use "a worse hive of scum and villany would be hard to find"- bunch of tossers.

What year was that, NACRO?
I think you'll find that the City shakeout over the past few years has removed most of the prima-donnas and egoists. Sure there are still some "choice" personalities out there, but by and large it's nothing like it used to be.
At the end of the day though, some of the most successful in the business are the most opinionated; after all, that's what makes markets, and makes or loses you money. "I'm not sure" doesn't really work for long.

Agree that you need to be a tough cookie to make it in that environment, it isn't a job I could do because of the pressure. It was more their social skills and attitude to their workmates I was decrying. I remeber an animal rights protest group causing trouble outside the building because of Flemings links to Huntingdon Life Sciences and seeing one of the traders punch a young student type girl in the stomach as he forced his way past- summed them up for me.
I was there during 2000 in the building just up from threadneedle street nr a nice leafy square (can't quite remember the exact date,may have been 2001, I did a lot of consultancy when the money was good
)just as they were taken over by Chase Manhattan. I wonder if they still have the piper doing his rounds these days?

Not only do you have to wear a uniform to work, they expect you to pay for it too?! Damn. And 70 quid a shirt? I think I paid $6 for the Gap shirt I'm wearing right now. Nice flannel number, goes well with the trainers.
