John,
I was talking about 60-100 times (dry as we dont want to upset the M3 owners now ) where the SMG box comes into its own, an STi will have a much better chance against one though
Anyway, im off to go and pick up my new car (which has a 6 speed box, dccd-a etc etc etc )

Tony

I have been fortunate enough to own a nicely modified P1, and currently have a Type RA for playing in and an E46 M3 for every day stuff.

I know which one is quickest

Which one?
And how did your P1 feel in relation to the M3?

The P1 was the quickest car point to point, but had a lot of money spent on the suspension, brakes and engine to make it that way. Upto 100 mph it was very very strong, more so than the M3.

The M3 is heavier, with everything but the kitchen sink fitted to it. It does pull very well, but just lacks the initial pull of the P1, and the RA to a degree. The power delivery is far more linear though, with it being normally aspirated.

The RA, as lots of people on this board will know, with it's short gearing is very quick upto 70-90 mph (mine is anyway), but then loses against the P1 and M3.

The P1 was a great car but mine was not very good for doing 35k miles per year - the loud exhaust and firm suspension saw to that, coupled with an average of 18 mpg. The M3 on the other hand can be very docile when nipping to the shops, or a tail slider when you want it to.

Hope that gives a bit more info; just my experiences

Tony, is there anything special about the 60-100 time in the SMG? I thought it was almost 7 seconds?
