Steve,
You want to try Electrics in an explosive gas atmosphere.![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Fortunatly we have a close working relationship with the HSE inspectorate and tend to work with them. We see them at least a couple of times a month. I can't ever remember being served a prohibition or improvement notice on our site but we have been close a couple of times and we have had more than our fair share of very serious accidents.
The current general line with the HSE is to prosecute as they haven't the resources to treat every industry like ours though.

Lee,
"a few reportables a month"
is something wrong in your workplace? I ask in all seriousness, becuase that level of RIDDOR reportables would suggest something might be wrong.Training, equipment, productivity pressure I dunno. But I have had a visit from an EHO after 2 F2508s in 6 months. They wanted to check my training records amongst other things.
That just sounds high to me,but i stress i am not being critical ont he operation,in your line of work this may be the norm.
Are they reportable due to hospital attendance or time off?

In the area of site contracting that sounds about right!!!
Whatever form of RA you go for, I'd try to avoid making them complicated or long winded. Remember, a RA that will satisfy the HSE means nothing if the blokes doing the job don't understand it.
We get people turn up with 100 page method statements and RAs for a simple little job. The guys doing the job won't read them as they don't have time - they have a job to do right?!?! When they do read it, they pull it to pieces as a load of crap. The best ones come from the same guys, when I tell them to go away with 2 sides of A4 and write the method statement for the job they're here to do. Then fax that to their office for the boss to sign!
Water, electricity, explosive atmosheres? You'd love it here, on a refinery's power station construction site!!!!! Never a dull moment.

We do have our fair share of broken bones, +3 day accidents and 24 hour hospital attendances though. It's the fatalities and serious injuries we try to illiminate while trying to keep the rest to a minimum.
Compared to Europe we are probably the leaders in terms of Health and Safety in our industry, compared to the rest of the world we are Safety Gods. Places like Africa, China, Russia and Poland think nothing of killing a few hundred men a year.
The nature of the work is why we have our own set of HSE inspectors and why we see them so often.
Cheers
Lee
