The best beer?

Best draught beer = Adnams - and seems to taste better if drunk (so to speak) in it's home town of Southwold.
Best lager? Grolsch was nice when it was imported prior to being brewed here, ditto Castlemaine.
As said, Budvar is good.
Kronenbourg is still one of my favourites, had some of my best hangovers on that

Adnams Broadside- a fine example of an excellent British Bitter, just to strong for me though, thus my choice of Harvey's best.

Anyone who drinks proper beer, or ale, already knows that there is no 'best beer'. We are all in a quest to find a better beer, even when we have our distinct favourites.
However, there are guidelines;
1. Steer clear of mass produced **** such as Carlsberg Tetley, Newcastle & Scottish. Particularly on the bitter side - these are all pumped with additives to ensure they last longer, usually served colder than they should be - reducing the taste, and obviously the ability to detect 'off beer' (until the next morning). Similarly, many contain nitrogen to give a good head (well we all like a bit of good head, but not necessarily on your pint) when poured.
2. Bottles are far superior to cans
3. The pub that serves the beer is just as important as the beer itself. - There's no point in having a delightful pint of 6X if a) the pipes are not cleaned regulalry, b) the barrel is served too soon (beer not fully developed), or too late (beer off and better use on chips), c) the booze is watered down, etc etc. - A bad pint of a good ale can put you off it for life.
Oh and have a bun with it, darling!

Leffe is a proper beer - My local has Leffe on tap and the tap has an iced glass cleaner, always drink it in halfs to keep quality and temp good!
Also Duvell and West Maley - both excellent beers.
The monks rule when it comes to beer!!

Bottled Stella for me, cans are bloody horrible since I converted to bottles.
Guiness extra cold is also high on my list.
Kronenburg will be my second choice if there is no stella on tap.
And as for bitter, the best pint I have had was a pint of John Smiths in a quiet pub in the North Yorkshire dales, that was a proper pint of John Smiths, not the cr@p you get in the cans in supermarkets or in Southern pubs. Bloody great it was

Ahh... beer. Nice to know I'm not the only one who takes their drinking seriously! (No, really - I keep formal, written tasting notes. I'm up to 555 right now, strangely enough).
Favourite beer that's still available has to be Adnams Broadside, a well-kept example of which truly is the nectar of the Gods. Ridley's Rumpus is good stuff, as are Whim Old Izaak, Burton Bridge Ticklebrain and Cottage Brewing Co's Norman's Conquest. Sadly no longer available, but fantastic while they were, are Gales Anniversary Ale and Eldridge Pope Thomas Hardy's Ale (best drunk at about 1 yr old).
Worst? John Martin Gordon Xmas beer was horrible. Van Honsebrouck Framboise Vieux Bruges was worse. Yates Premium didn't bear thinking about. I could go on.
For me the worst thing is not that there are some truly bad beers out there, but that anyone could possibly rank mass-produced fizz as a favourite. The vast majority of nitrokeg and canned beers are awful! How people can drink them out of choice is beyond me.
Scoobynet trip to this year's Great British Beer Festival anyone?

Andy - certainly agree with you about Broadside. A favorite pint in a suffolk pub I used to visit with my dad was Broadside and Bitter - a small bottle of Braodside poured into the pint glass and then topped up with Adnams best bitter. The publican was a miserable b*stard, but his beer keeping was impeccable.

There is only one..
Stella!!
Worst has to be Budweiser..
Edited to mention how Hoegarden is worse than Bud, looks like the cup of beer that stiffler drinks in American pie after his mate has laced it with baby gravy!!

i love those stella ads "reassuringly expensive..."
what, £11 for 24 x 0.5 litre cans in Eastenders? that's not exactly breaking the bank, is it?
i do drink it from time to time, but it's europ*ss, straight out of the euro chemical brew factory - no more, no less.

I'm lucky living right in between the Adnams and Greene King breweries - use to drink Headbanger many years ago - half GK Abbott and half St Edmund strong ale in a bottle - finished it off with port one lunchtime and was in a VERY bad state afterwards ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Went to the fridge a little while ago and did a stocktake and am currently drinking a pint of Newcastle Brown Ale - probably get flamed for this one but it was my first beer whilst on holiday to Newcastle when around age 13 and the taste for one occasionally has stuck with me ever since![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Will finish it off with the half of a bottle of Cava that's left in the fridge from last night

Adnam's Broadside
Green King Abbot Ale
Moorhouse's Pendlewitches' Brew
Belgium Beers esp. Gulden Drak
Guinness
Budvar
Singah (not gold though)

Right then beer experts. ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I am a 'know nowt' when it comes to beers, is Lager a beer?
I think so.
Anyway, I have been frequenting 'posh' bars of late due to my better half not putting up with our local sh1tehole anymore. Either that or or I have been paying the barmaids too much attention.![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
I drink Carling out the pump, I have branched out a bit in our new 'posh' bars and selected Carling Extra Cold. If I drink bottles, I drink Bud.
In these new bars they have rows and rows of fridges full of different bottles of Lager, most Ive never heard of. Also the Lager on tap has a large selection, again some Ive not heard of.
Finally to the question, what Lager should I try? Bottles and draught. Bearing in mind I like Carling.![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
And what the best brand of bottled Lager to drink to elliminate hangovers.
Cheers Yoza (shandy drinker)
