Started off in my mid 20's working closely with the law enforcement community.
5 yrs or so later I work on a contract basis troubleshooting for a major oil company.
All achieved with an average degree and and an above average talent for persuasion and manipulation.

Wanted to go into the Army (Royal Engineers)... war in 1981 put paid to that !!
Four years as an apprentice welder / plater.
Came out of that (made redundant on the day I took my exam papers in!!) time for a career change.
Decided on procurement, went back to collage on day release and night school, passed more exams, passed MCIPS,
Now Procurement Director for a major blue chip plc, controlling a spend in the region of ~£210m.

I got very little from school other than a smokers cough
Worked for pizza hut for 8 years and got up to store manager.
Left with no job to go to as I ' don't work for ***** ' as my area mgr found out
Blagged an interview with a software company for trainee sales role, still here nearly 5 years later and mass redundancies
When I started I couldn't use the software I sell or type with more than 1 finger, I still can't, but I can sell the steam of my **** now
Great post by the way very interesting

Upto the age of 16 I wanted to be a pilot, must have played too many flight sims in my yoof!, but colour blindness knocked that one on the head.
Currently contracting in IT . It's better than a real job I suppose lol.

well, currently work for a creditcard company doing every menial job under the sun for peanuts. but soon to have a nice VTS on the drive so its not all bad and im only just turned 19.
planning on going to uni next year to do economics which is something i have a big interest in and like a lot of people on this thread have aspirations to be a millionaire. always wanted to be a footballer when i was a kid (and nearly was if i had a bit more drive) and failing that a rally driver ( still a possibility) but about 1 in a billion chance of that happening. Chris Meeke didnt even take it up until he got a degree so thats the route im planning on
failing that ill see how my degree goes and hopefully set something up on my own because i vowed not to be another cog in the system from an early age. would consider myself brighter than most and have a decent work ethic about me so no point making money for everyone but yourself when you can do it on your own.

How do you do it?
Started playing shares when 15. Started with Eurotunnel and i still have it. Not made a penny from it.
Give me some advice. Im 23 and a small player but what can I do to get into shares. Reading?
I tend to buy shares when I have a gut feeling about a company and that does not happen to alot.
bought some Vodafone shares (1000 shares) about a months ago paid £1.25 not trading about £1.42 so not making big money.

BTTT for some more.
I was at the competition that Kris won, to get his first works drive (Peugeout 106) His father is a professional driver, RallyX I think?, and you're telling me he never had driven a competition rally car before that event ??? (That was one of the rules for the comp!)

Wanted to be a jockey! Did YTS at a riding stables, early mornings not good. did lots of pants jobs, then went to Uni to do my Mental health nurse training but jacked after a year. Now I'm a rehabilitation support worker, supporting people with accuired or trumatic head injury. See the aftermath of RTA's most days, makes you think alot about how you drive and how others drive.

Wanted to fly since I was old enough to know anything.
Joined the Navy then into the Royal Marines as a helicopter pilot. Did all the cushy tours - Falklands, Beirut etc - before coming out of the mob.
Into 'consultancy' still flying much of the time but as a civilian. Smae kit, better hours and get called sir by more people. Oh, and it pays better too.
Into a proper consulting firm just in time to get made redundant and to hit my compulsory retirement from reserve time as well.
A little more consultancy pre Gulf War Mk II but have been spending most of the last couple of years as a journalist.
SB - Skint but happy.

Left school at 16 with just two 'O' levels back in '85, (maths & technolgy (materials, structures & electronics)
Wanted to do some kind of Mech/Elec engineering originally, and was going to go to college to study electronics, realised the silicon chip was starting to take over the world, so got a job in the local supermarket so I could get drunk at weekends
got into management early on, then spent many years as a project manager refitting Somerfield Stores all around the country (been to almost all of them)
eventually got made redundant (once we upgraded most of the shops) and took a pay cut and moved into the PC support department
now working as a senior consultant doing all kind of Server bollox, mainly NHS & legal sector thesedays, but mostly leading edge technologies

Ray-li - It is easy to make money on shares - The main prob is that you need a vast pile of money to start with. Esp if you want to live off the profit. I mess about with shares and spread betting, I reckon I could probably make a decent living at it, but it takes major bollocks to turn 'I reckon I could' into 'I do'
Imagine having a 100k pot to make 3% a month (gross compound of 50% a year, which is something special.) Imagine putting 25% into a dead cert - like Marconi - in December 1999. Imagine sellng that 25k worth of shares for a couple of hundred quid two years later. Imagine the bollocks you would need not to cry

Wanted to do something in the Audio Industry/Music Business.
Left school with 7 GCSEs. Went to college for the next 3.5 yrs doing BTEC ND&HND in Professional Sound & Video Technology.
The last 6months of college, I was lucky enough to be dropped into a job.
With UB40. Started off as a Tea boy - worked my way up to producing Labour Of Love3, along with being taken around the world, and working with some of my music heros
The only sod was the hours - average session would be about 1 week. You'd get to sleep maybe for 10 hrs total.
They gave me everything but a Number 1, so in 1999, left there to find a life. Realised I'd got married in the meantime started a family.
Whilst enjoying the fruits of my previous job, started Part-time lecturing - at my old college, teaching Sound Production, programming (MIDI & hard-disk audio/video) and other audio-related subjects.
Still did an awful lot of freelance work - progamming, producing etc.
Moved away to where I am now - Full-time Head of Sound @ a new college.
Still doing loads of commercial-based pop & dance music & coporate stuff on the side.
It's an existance

As a kid I wanted to be a Zooologist but gave up that idea as I couldn't spell it and I realised that animals smell.
Second idea was to join the police. Got as far as applying but put off by the major corruption in the Jersey force and the number of extremely dumb officers. NB Not an anti-police thread, many of them are my mates
After I left school I still couldn't decide so worked as a petrol attendant for a year before going to Uni to read Accounting & Finance. Got job as accountant but bored rigid by it after 7 years. Moved to Banking as needed cheap subsidised mortgage to buy house in Jersey. Worked my **** off for 12 years but fed up with Dilbert style office politics. Moved to Barclays as Head of Offshore Compliance for International Funds on salary of 15 times my original accountants salary.
Exactly one year of doing that was enough for me to end up with my own room in a mental hospital and then a nice stay at The Priory Clinic.
Decided at age 40 and discharge from Priory that a redical change of lifestyle was required. Sold house in Jersey and moved to Devon.
Last did a conventional job Oct 2002. Survive now on renting out holiday cottage, running livery service for horses on our large yard and mostly from our network marketing business that seems to grow exponentially every month.
I would never go back to a 9-5 office job. We now have a quality of life undreamt of when we spent all of our time working for other people.
My son pointed out that I appear to be working my way through the alphabet of jobs:
A = Accountant
B = Banker
C = Compliance Officer
D = Dad! I really liked that one.

Always wanted to work with horses, left school at 18 and became trainee draughtsman [woman]. Bored me to tears, money was crap and didn’t cover outlay for keeping 2 horses, so went to work for my father doing accounts, admin etc.
Got married at 20 and achieved wish to work with horses as we had 20 acres of land, had my own yard, subsidised it by taking in liveries to be able to carry on eventing my 2 horses and start breeding show ponies. That all came to an end with divorce
Now I do freelance book-keeping/payroll working from home.

I always wanted to be a Lawyer.
I still think its the best job in the world.
Problem is i'm just not clever enough.
For example Mark Geragos who is now representing Michael Jackson, you'd never say that was boring. What a completely challenging and absorbing case that would be.
And he gets paid a mint too.

wanted to be a lorry driver like me dad, but was very young,
