The Michelin Alpins are on their UK website, so I would assume that you can get them in the UK. I had to order them here (took 3 days) so you'll definately need to order in UK IMO.

I heard about a guy that claimed that 4wheel-drive and and 185 studded wintertyres ...are good..!?

Of course all cars delivered here have no ABS..? since itīs rubbish in snow. Or?
Trying to drive ANY powerful car in snow on the wrong kind of rubbers, could be fatal.

I understand that you guys drives on snow, just a few days per year.

Peronally, i didnīt take my Impreza out of the garage without wintertyres....
I drove it three winters, and īwhen you get used to it...itīs the best wintercar (with the right rubbers) that you could dream of.

Having the car slightly sliding sideways in 140 kmph with control...is kind of...rally!

The brittish idea of disconnecting the ABS fuse to make the tyres (225:s?) plowing in the snow sounds a bit like the old saying we have..."why do the brittish put the waterpipes on the outside of the house?...-So that you can reach them when they freeze..!"
(I donīt want to **** you guys of, itīs only my thoughts...)

Rustas, your very right... We Brits are not really educated to think about the tyres we use, the result is we generally fit whatever tyre we want and expect it to work perfectly the whole year. I didn't even know winter tyres existed until I moved to Germany and then I didn't bother fitting them 'cos I thought they would be a waste of time, particularly with AWD. Boy was I wrong!!!

Since moving to Germany, I think differently about a lot of things and now find I can look objectively back at the UK and spot a lot of failings in the way we do things and behave etc. Thats not to say we don't do some things right too, but you really have to look back from the outside to see whats right and wrong!

The British government goes on and on about making the roads safer and trying to save lives and prevent accidents... their solution is to put speed cameras everywhere... but no amount of speed cameras is going to prevent accidents on the motorways where heavy traffic is moving at 60mph in torrential rain. Fitting winter tyres would quite probably prevent a hell of a lot more accidents and save more lives that the speed camereas success rate would be insignificant! The press don't do anything to help here either... why arn't the British motor press trying to educate the drivers and informing them about the advantages of using winter tyres!

Any argument about the cost and not being able to justify it is also complete rubbish too... for one what value do you put on your or someone elses lives? Secondly, you have two sets of tyres, usually fitted to two sets of wheels, so each set of tyres will last twice as long! If you have two sets of wheels you can change them yourself, so theres no extra cost there either - most people swap fronts and backs every six months anyway! Sure you have an initial outlay of getting extra wheels and tyres, but you normally would negociate this when you buy the car and get a good deal. Your Winter wheels would also normally be steel, so arn't so expensive anyway! Besides, how many scooby owners have swapped their original wheels for bigger ones anyway... why not just fit winter tyres to the old wheels?

[rant off!]

Cool

Got to say that I haven't had a problem getting about in either snow or ice (as it is now). Live in the countryside up single-track roads on the top of a hill. Not had any grip worries and have driven where & when I wanted. Using 215/17s F1s, which I realise are not entirely suitable, and I have a switch on my ABS which is off for snow/ice/slush. Haven't had a problem stopping either, though of course it is a bit longer distance so needs to be taken into account.

Went track making for wife in her FWD car and she struggled to get up the same hill I breezed up.

Driver education is definately what is needed in snow. Thinking WELL ahead for hazards and then ACTING well ahead as well. Hanging far back from the car in front to allow for emergencies and keeping in high gear and foot off the gas pedal. Acting cautiously.

Doesn't mean you can't have fun when you want though The roads to us now look like a sort of wriggly animal has passed throug them Powerslides, lift-off, fish-tailing Want more snow!

Tempted to get the winter tyres but I need a job and some new F1s as well Got enough rims lying around

& yes GM - I was keeping an eye on the temps with my snow-plough. PITA to take off the lip though...
