In our last house, we lived on the edge of our village. The houses opposite backed onto fields. One summer they all had letters to say that a small factory from the other side of the village wanted to re-locate and build a brand new building in part of the filed. As our house did not back onto the land, we never saw the letter, but one of the neigbours sent copies to everyone in the close. His covering letter stated that we should object mainly due to the fact that the new builing would be outside the village boundy as stated on the Local Plan.

I wrote a letter of complaint and listed this amoungst my objections (increased traffic, noise, fumes). I later heard that it had been declined. Whether this was due to our objections or something else I don't know. A few months later the factory in the village closed...

I was quite pleased as well as supprised by the result. Just shows you can win, if you chose the right objections and communicate them well enough.

I am a bit confused there Nimbus do you mean you were pleased you had contributed to the factory closure or just the application as being "pleased" to see the closure of a place for rural employment seems a bit harsh especially as countryside employment is under such severe pressure at the moment.

interesting posts saxoboy as somone who deals with planning officers on a regular basis i appreciate the enormous pressures they often have to endure.
For the most part i find them proffesional and helpful but there is the odd rotten apple one (who shall remain namless) once implied we had made too much money from a particular planning decision ????? is if that is any of his concern.

These are actually the people I like dealing with the most. Not the really arrogant pushy developers but the ones that have their head screwed on and are there to make a fast buck. I can always tell the difference between an extension to a house to make money and one to serve the needs of a person or family. I always pay close attention to such property developers because I hope to jump the fence one day myself so there is much to learn from them I find some of the projects that people embark on very interesting and my only gripe is I hate the roll I play in the process. I'd much rather have the risks and rewards of property/land development

I was pleased that the application had be turned down. Of course I was not pleased that the factory eventually closed (although my post could be read that way).

I don't know if the refusal had anything directly to do with the factory closing. Maybe they withdraw the application *because* they were closing...
