3 more points?

All this raises an interesting point.
I have seen some Gasto's with line's on the opposite side of the road. This is either
1. So you cannot swerve onto other side of road and get round it.
In which case the radar is either able to detect speed on that side of the road. So is it clever enough to know the car is travelling away or towards the camera? My limited knowlegde of radar says it does not (maybe military radar could do that, but the basic Gatso - no). If its dangerous to have flashing at oncoming drivers and it doesn't really work, then move to point 2. If they are flashing on coming drivers, well surely that's dangerous?
2. To fool people into thinking that the camera can get you on that side of the road. They have no intention of making it work on that side of the road, just putting lines up.
Either way I'd group lines on other side of the road in the same league as revenue generating camera's IMO.

How about this one then - I was driving down a road I know very well and I knew there was a speed camera on my side of the road. I was doing no more than 30 in a 30, but a BMW was coming in the opposite direction at speed (probably closer to 45). He triggered the speed camera at the point I was travelling over the white markings. Will I get done, or is the system capable of sussing this out?

Subarstar,
You may get a nip, but return it, asking them to check the pictures / distance travelled.
There was a recent court case where the driver was accused of doing over 50 - in reality (proven in court) he was doing 13MPH.
They say the camera never lies - but it can be confused with radar flash back - this is where the system adds two cars speeds together and issues a ticket. Only human intervention can check the number of lines covered in a set amount of time.
Good luck
Chris

Is there a limit to the size of object that will set off the flash??
I always thought it would be a good idea to watch when they load it with new film, get a tennis racket and a bucketfull of *****, and serve past it a few times until it ran out of film!!

Can't speak for the rest of the UK but the one's around us use digital camera's that load the image onto CD.
Only limiting factor with them, is the issue of a nip in 14 days rule.
Some of the first peeps through the camera are let off because the tax man (er sorry Police) arn't back to the camera for the CD within the 14 day deadline.

Miniman, sorry to disolusion you but its easy for a radar to work out which way your going. Radar speed sensing works by 'dopler shift' baically a fixed frequency signal is produced by the radar in the camera unit. If you are going towards the camera the frequency of the returned signal goes up if the car is going away it goes down. Then to work out the speed the you measure the difference in frequency . the doppler 'shift' as it is known it will be either negative or positive and from their you get your speed.
