Who cares about women being oppressed? What about men being oppressed in this country? Do fathers have as much rights as women do here? What about alimony? Why do men always have to pay alimony and lose half his property yet women are allowed to get away with it?

The system here sucks even more in this case..

So many of the organized religious phylosophies pay no attention to the betterment of the world, as a whole.
They are self centered on the possibility of an "afterlife" that is tenuous, at best.

IMHO if we payed more attention to our treatment of this planets life forms and the betterment of our atmosphere, succeding generations might live a more healthfull life and have a longer chronological span to carry on that tradition!

Long live the EARTH and all its cooperative inhabitants!!!!!

I disagree with this! most women do this to themselves! they don't need us to tell them they are fat.

Men fall in love with women regardless of their size it is the woman that bleats on about being fat or ugly when they see thinner prettier women.

You don't see a bloke getting upset and going on a diet when he sees a picture of George Clooney, Mel Gibson some other good looking bloke do you.

Women are their own worst enemies in this department.

Q.Time last nite; Ann Widecombe raised a very good point on all this;- if a country does band religious clothing/symbols, that country runs a strong risk of marginalising the group to such an extent they will build their own (eg Muslim) only schools, which would likely cause more focus for racism and remove whatever group from the chance of being integrated into other cultures at a mixed religion school.

I don't agree, by not trying to integrate, they marginalise themselves.

People should be allowed to follow whatever religion they want, and wear whatever they want should their religion dictate it, as long as it does not go against the law of that land.

The US has plenty of problems with regards to race etc. but at least most people over there seem to see themselves as US before anything else. That's how it should be. They are a nation enriched by the integration of different cultures who have evolved to the American way of life, not a nation of Europeans, Asians and Africans all at odds with each other.

Also, for opressing women, Islam is no worse than many other religions. However, Islam is still actively denying women their rights, whereas nations which are predominantly other religions have either moved with the times, or have turned their backs on the outdated religions anyway.

As for saying that Moslem women want to wear veils or burkas (sp?), that is the same as saying that Ku Klux Klan members want to be racist. They have had those views hammered into them by their parents and peers, so don't know any better. If you tell women that they should cover up, or that certain behaviour is forbidden from a very early age, then that is all they know and are unlikely to question it, especially when faced with the bullying tactics of their men folk.

Women in the western world are still generally second class unfortunately, but at least we are progressing. They are given the choice of how they wish to behave, so getting your t1ts out on page 3 is not exploitation of women in the slightest. In fact, they are exploiting male weakness to make shed loads of money!

All IMHO of course

Geez - I totally disagree with that, and it is certainly not my experience of USA. They integrate so badly over there and they have a long history of it too. There is a distinct and separate district for each racial group and never the twain shall meet – even affluent blacks rarely live in the same wealthy suburbs as whites. In fact the richer whites are busily building gated communities to isolate themselves further from the disempowered blacks & Hispanics. They are actually scared of the cultural difference and the results of disenfranchisement of large sections of the community…

I was working in our Miami office for a few weeks, and out of the 10 of us that often went out clubbing there was generally only one black guy to be seen in most places, let alone mingling with a gang of us pasty boys – it was my mate Ronnie from London who popped over for a few days… I think that’s really sad.

I honestly believe the USA makes the UK look like a model of race relations...

Pick and choose your USA area of habitation.
Ethnic groups prefer being with their own.
Integration is a matter of personal preference. Those who wish to integrate will. Those who feel insecure will seek out their own.
Gated communities are isolationist for security reasons. The "rich and affluent" can afford to develope according to their personal taste and feelings of insecurity.
In the "country" we have people who have come from densly populated areas who bring their insecurities with them. Gates across the drive, bars on their windows and doors, alarm systems.
Unfortunately this is a testament to some societal areas where imoral attitudes are prevalent.
Predominatly though, we are a trusting society, with reservations.
In the part of the "country" where I live, many still do not lock their doors and windows. By the same token, it is a matter of common knowledge that a home invader would suffer if they decided to practice their activity around this area.

And yes, we are still allowed to protect ourselves and property with deadly force.
Having done so myself, the "word" has been passed that it is dangerous to mess about with the people in our valley.

We go about our lives with the secure knowledge that neighbors WILL come to the aid of one of their own, in times of difficulties.
How many areas can say they know every neighbor within several square miles and have a compatible relationship with them?

BillBill,

Sounds like your village/town has a sence of community that is now sadly lacking in many English villages...

Yes Nimbus, there are many communities like this. But, they are slowly but surely becoming a rarity.
And the irony is that they are being changed by the very people that move into them for that very facet that they perceive to be so attractive.
At community gatherings, they insist upon expounding upon what it was like where they have moved from. Elaborating upon how their new neighbors should subscribe to the lessons of their past experiences.
Possibly they are somewhat correct. Time will tell, and possibly there is an inevitability to the changes, in society, of which they have are personally aware.
I have lived in and visited the crime ridden areas of which the U.S. has been stereotyped.
The entire county that I currently live in did not experience a murder or drive by shooting all of last year, 150.000 population. And we have a very diversified population that has a drug subculture that is prone to many of the related support crimes.
Our community is at the Western boundary of this county.
I do know of a few families that do not have firearms, by choice, but most have the normal accountrements of hunting, both for fowl and larger game. And most, when hunting, carry a sidearm for smaller game or to finish off a large wounded game animal.

Our cultures (GB vs. US) have grown so very different that many in each culture find it hard to relate to the others problems and attitudes.

*well there I go, getting phylosophical again and losing my train of thought*

I think Geezer is right when he says that people should be able to worship whatever religion they wish and wear whatever clothes they need to as long as doing either of those things does not de-stabilise our society or offend the eye for reasons of decency.

I don't find the burqa or the hijab in any way unpleasant to look at. People from other countries look different to native Brits anyway if they have skins of a different colour. "So what" I say! Quite unnecessary also to force the children to wear a standard school uniform . They all hate it and they really only need to come to school dressed smartly. Should make no difference to integration either.

Time for some tolerance I think.

Many poorer students can't afford to dress 'smartly' and also, who's to say what 'smart' is. There could be many interpretations, so there'd need to be a standard about what is appropriate like, erm, err, umm, a school uniform. One standard already exists, easy to follow, cheap to buy, it works so why waste time and taxpayers money changing it? One of the reasons for school uniforms is so that pupils from poorer backgrounds don't 'stand out' or are alienated because they turn up in cheap, sometimes tatty clothes. Richer pupils could be showing off their expensive clothes making the poorer ones feel worse. This is wholy inappropriate in a school environment. With a standard uniform, all pupils are the same and are thus treated equally.

So if enough people had put Jedi Knight as religion on the last cencus then it would have been a valid religion right?

Would that then give my kids the right to go to school in full Star Wars robes as this is their religious beliefs???

Just makes you realise how stupid the whole issue is.

School uniform should be simply applied with no excuses. Let schools get on with educating and not waste time on all this other crap. Does it matter if the kids parents are Christian, Jews, Islamic or even Satanists, just teach the little bleeders to read and write first.

Dracoro has the right of it.
Also, over here we have the "Gang Bangers" who have their "Uniform" of their respective gang affiliation. This is also alleviated with the school uniform.

I seem to remember that school uniform was always more expensive to buy by far, as usual the rip off merchants jumped in and cvharged the earth for it. Much cheaper to dress your children in non uniform but respectable looking clothing.

I went to a good school via the 11 plus scholarship (instituted by Old Labour)and my parents found it very difficult to find the money for the school uniform. I shouldn't bother with the attempt at inverted snobbery Geezer unless you know all the facts.

The school uniform came from a local shop and the price was hiked right up since they had the monopoly.
