Thanks for that Farmer1
I was interested to hear from a pupils point of view how the situation could be handled. It would be interesting to hear what the disruptive members of your class would suggest. Something more on the lines of what Sith suggested I would imagine!!! lol

I agree with you that the standard should be set at the beginning of every lesson.
If you don't do that then your stuffed from the start! However, it is difficult to find the balance though. If you go in there with too harsh an attitude the kids think "oh right this one thinks she can tell us what to do does she" or if your too tame they are ready to take advantage straight away.

No offence is taken from your views of the effectiveness of female teachers in this situation. There is no way I can achieve what a male teacher can as far as physical presence is concerned. The young lads are bound to try it on far more with me than a male teacher. The situation is though that on the whole the teaching profession is mostly female.
It is not surprising the attitude of some of these kids though when their parents are not setting a good example. Some of the attitudes of the fathers I have met leave a lot to be desired to say the least! So there is no wonder the lads show no respect for female teachers. I doubt they respect their own mothers.

I don't think corporal punishment is the answer. There is no way I could ever physically harm a child for discipline or another reason. The day I have to do that is the day I quit.
But what we do need is a consistent system that disciplines the child.
There is no point for example expelling a child from school only to have the parents complain and then the child being allowed to come back the next day. There is no stigma to being expelled anymore. Its like a soddin trophy for some of these kids!

Remind me why am I a teacher again???

Thumbs up

Parents are always to blame, and a teachers job is hard enough these days without little bellends like that in class.

Bring back discipline I say, and for those that say "if anyone did that to my kid" etc etc, its parents like you that are bringing up the little ******* that are ruining society, cos they get away with murder.

My wife is a teacher, and the number of rough parents that couldnt give a toss is unreal. But as soon as their kid is "told off" (which these days means nothng), both parents are in school (usually over 30 stone each) threatening physical violence, solicitors etc.

Shambles!!!

The whole point is that they shouldn't even think that. They are the students, you are the teacher. You are the Adult. As such they do as you say. You shouldn't have to go in and try to earn their respect. It should be given by default. You are the leader of the pack.

When I was at school the kids had no fear of punishment, when there is no fear there is no control.

When my Dad was at school, there was fear of the teachers and the cane. If you talked in class you got the ruler across the palm. You did it again and it was the Headmasters office. Worse was to be expected. As a result there was discipline.

Your view of which you are entitled to, encourages the kids attitude. The, ohh can't hurt the little darlings enhances the knowledge that they will not get into trouble, they will not feel pain or remorse for the trouble they have caused. They know there is nothing that can hurt them. Kids nowadays are far more hardened against words or threats. Direct action only seems to work.

I see it on the transport system and on the streets.

When I was young I didn't back chat an Adult. I expect to get clobbered, now the kids know they can get away with it and push Adults and general members of the public around with out fear of reprisals. Seen it at my local train station too many times. The Adults are now scared to retaliate incase they get into trouble with the law for defending themselves This is all wrong.

The softly softly aproach doesn't work. Look at the amount of people in prison. Look at the amount of violent crime that is reported. So much is now by people of my age and younger that didn't face C Punishment at school.
I mean, c'mon, Prison guards aren't allowed to ruff up the prisoners.

I am so fed up with this namby pamby ooh can't hurt, can't touch and can't discipline the youth today brigade. When this country finally goes to the dogs it is they who are to blame.

The kids at my school made my life hell because there was no threat to them. As a result MY education suffered. For that I cannot and will not forgive them. They deserve to be punished.

I agree with you Sith!
I would never have dared behave like some of these kids do today when I was at school. I was only at the local comprehensive school but I even lived in fear of the 6th formers when I started school. Would you believe we even opened doors for them! I'm talking only 15years ago. By the time I got to the 6th form the little first formers had suddenly become a lot tougher than we ever were. There was me looking forward to getting respect as a 6th former...ha! By the time I got there the first formers had suddenly become little thugs!

Where did it all go so wrong????

I'll never forget this lad in my class, he was the class clown. He ruined all our maths lessons. I was always crap at maths and his behaviour took so much of the teachers time, I'm know my maths suffered because of him. The teacher ended up being investigated because the lad claimed the teacher had hit him. It wasn't true but the teacher was never the same again. He was a great maths teacher but that lad spoiled it for all of us. I think the teacher left not long after.

I have been very lucky so far and have had no dicipline problems. But I work in a small country school. I dread to think what a bigger city school would be like.
I think I'll stay where I am thankyou very much!

I'm pleased we see eye to eye.

Deffo stick to the Country School. I know of a female teacher who was 25 at the time, went and taught in a Secondry all boys school. She was warned against it. She didn't last long. It's a shame as she is a nice person. This is why I want to see punishment brought back, I felt the same when I was at school.

Where did it all go wrong......Flower Power. Peace Love and Happiness. Doesn't work. Be nice if it did but the human race is not programmed that way.
