Cyclist were not riding anything like the the way they do now in London even 10 years ago.
Between 1992 and 1996 I lived in Roehampton and used to cycle to and from work in Covent Garden each day. Just over a 10 mile journey.
You could pretty much guarantee that all couriers would go through red lights on my route. Not so the commuter cyclists like me. I'm not saying all, but roughly 90% of all fellow cyclists stopped for red lights, zebra crossings etc. No argument about that, it's a fact.
Went abroad for a couple of years.
Came back, resumed my journey, again between Roehampton and this time Soho (Covent Gardens about 5mins away)
I couldn't believe the a)deterioration in cycling standards and b) just how many more cyclists there where on the roads. It had more or less gone full reverse. Now the majority of all cyclist where going through lights like they didn't exist. I couldn't believe it.
Now to my mind, and yeah it's mostly subjective it's the couriers who've influenced this. Othere cyclists seeing them flout the rules just thought 'sod it' and now do the same.
Standards have plumeted Puff, make no mistake about it. The police and let people get away with it for so long it's become the norm.

bullshine !! nobody stuck to the highway code when you they a kid , because you didn't even know what the highway code was !! unless you were a complete **** ! i ask you at what age did you pick up the code , i'll tell you 17 , the day before your test thats when !!

Not all of it sure, but my parents certainly made sure I knew the basics before I could ride on the road. Plus as a kid I was always asking what does that sign mean, or what do those lines on the road mean etc etc when we were out in the car

I was once crossing the road in Holborn on a zebra crossing. This bicycle courier was obviously not going to stop and started to ride round me and my colleague - spitting some charming expletives while doing so. It was obviously a dangerous manouvre because somehow his jaw connected rather squarely with my fist.

As for the police never ticketing cyclists - a chap I used to work with (Nr Liverpool St station) got a ticket for cycling the wrong way up a one-way street. 30 quid it cost IIRC

Interesting, since when have we met??? I took my ROSPA cycling test at Primary School because I wanted to stay alive on my bike, I took pride in the fact I passed and KNEW the Highway code for cyclists.

So because I took pride and wanted to know the Highway code that makes me a **** does it?? Well you are obviously the **** for feeling insecure about your own lack of knowledge at that age. Judging by your inabilty to spell or string a coherent sentence together, it would appear you are still rather lacking in the intelligence department.

I'll ride anywhere to get ahead of the moaning minnies sitting in traffic, alone in their cars. Up the curb, on the pavement, undertake, across zebra crossings, whatever it takes. If all the whingers left their cars at home they wouldn't be sat at a red light whining in the first place.

Oohh, spot the cyclist! thou protest too much, if anyone did nearly plough me over at a crossing I would pretty quickly show them how quickly they can dismount!! I too ride a MTB on occasion. We have a major problem up here at the moment with ******* on BMX's racing about in the city centre on pavements and whizzing across roads in the dark with no lights on, they go about in groups of up to 20 and are an absolute menace, and who will get the blame when 1 of them get nailed by a car?

Perhaps the car drivers should also read the highway code. Just this morning I was on a roundabout, totally my right of way, and then a muppet driver pulled out on me. Being on a racing bike I (a) was going at some speed (27-28mph) (b) didn't have decent discs to stop me (as I would have if on my MTB).

When I shouted at said driver, who by this stage had stopped, I was told to "get off the f*cking road, it's not designed for cyclists". I happen to agree with him WRT design, but that's not the point, is it?

And this wasn't a no-licence uninsured muppet but a middle-class middle-aged bloke in an Accord Type R, whop really should have known better.

A case of inappropriate speed? Just think another 4 or 5 mph and we can start catching cyclists with the speed cameras too!

i get the funny feeling car drivers are a bit jealous of cyclists sometimes i can't condone red light jumping though

Mmmm - I am well jealous of the prospect of a 90 mile ride to work down the A14 getting there knackered and wet and then having to do it all over again after an 8 hour day. Yup I am such a mug for sitting in the car keeping warm and dry!

Mines is actually down to about 50 miles a day total now, but it was 90 each way last year

I am thinking of buying an old cheiftan tank and going over the top of the traffic jams, can take out the odd speed camera on the way by as well

They built a seperate cycle path next to the main A road between our town and the next village. The road's about 2 miles long, and the path cost £80k to build.

So do cyclists use it? Do they f***! Still have to dodge them riding without any form of lights at night.

I think we all need to just relax a little when on the roads - we're all infected with this rage and I don't know why. It's no good for anyone.

If a bike cuts you up, or a car for that matter, just let it go. Does it really matter? We seem to attach emotion to every single thing we do, and it's a constant battle that's a total waste of time when you really think hard about it.

I'm now going to go and drink some green tea, put my sandals on and go and hug a tree
