ProperCharlie.
Airlines are popular, but with CONSUMERS, because they're CHEAP, and take you on HOLIDAY. Try having 2 weeks off work in Thailand and NOT going by air. See how far you get before your boss is on the phone, asking why your not in work!
As for aviation tax, another great idea. Up the price by 100%, price 40% of the population out of thre market place, and watch the aviation industry implode, and dump thousands on the dole.
I spent 8 hours Tuesday listening to a Professor of aviation explaining about Bermuda 1 in 1946, and Bermuda 2 in 1977. The industry is protectionist, nationalist, and driven by emotion.

Last time I flew long-haul it was with about £5k worth of cameras and lenses.

Do you really think I'm going to hand that little lot to the baggage throwers?

ok, but no-one cared that much when the rail industry shed 70% of it's work force, or numerous other industries which have fallen by the wayside due to "market forces". IMO air travel should be for a few long hall trips in a life time, not for going to a meeting in Manchester. I find it bizarre that you can fly to glasgow for a fraction of the price of a train ticket. Why should airlines be allowed to f*ck up the environment without being fairly taxed for the damage they cause? why are they special? the haulage industry doesn't get any tax breaks and has suffered as a result - maybe they should get cut rate fuel too?

I understood that a metal nail file was used on one of the Sept 11th planes to gouge out the eye of one of the crew to show the terrorists meant business. This was not widely published. Hence the very sudden change in policy at all airports immediately afterwards.
