A plasma for £2K - you'll be almost guarunteed dead pixels and black will become a lighter shade of grey! You still need to pay about £4K+ to get a reliable plasma with no dead pixels and decent black level!
Personally I don't like rear (or front) projectors, the bulbs don't last long and cost a fortune to replace and they just don't have the brightness levels - you need to keep the curtains drawn to watch TV.
For that budget, I'd go for a 36" CRT and get the best 5.1 surround system you can with the remainder!

OK.
After weighing all the pros and cons, I have decided to go for the latest Sony rear projection 44" with home theatre kit for £1799. Screen is nice and big and its actually quite compact (not much bigger than the space the faulty 36" widescreen took up - there was lots of plastic!). Given that it will go in a corner it makes best use of space without looking silly.
Picture quality looked spot on (ok, not as crisp as a plasma) from the DVDs and standard sound was very good.
Can't wait!

Credit note because we've had the TV for over 3 months - they can't do straight refund.
Also, bought the insurance thing with guarantees replacement of faulty units with anthing of similar price for next 4 years (handy if a kid decides to put a toy thru the screen)!

Just found this thread, and for anyone thats looking for a very good 32" you'd be hard pushed to better a Panasonic TX32PD30C. Just trial tested one from my brother who works for Panasonic and its probably the best TV i've ever watched. £1229.99 from Empire Direct is the best I've found so far (but waaaaaay cheaper through my bro).

I have a Sony KF42SX200 LCD rear projection and it is absolutely fantastic.
Not too dark like many rear-proj and nice crisp picture quality, better than CRT. So it should be though for £3000

Can't believe no one has mentioned the Philips Pixel Plus TVs yet. Picture quality is outstanding, and for that money you should be able to get a 36" model. Plasmas and LCDs are too expensive for what they are and out-of-warranty repairs cost a bomb. I'll be sticking with CRTs myself till the flat-screen stuff becomes more realistically priced/better quality.

Hmmm...our TV that went faulty was a 36" Phillips PixelPlus. I didn't think much of the TV print - DVD was excellent.
Developed a fault whereby volume would not work when switched on from stand-by - had to do a manual on/off mission each time - very annoying.
The new one we have ordered, 44" (thats real 44" viewing as opposed to the 34" we got from the 36" phillips), is a Sony rear proj (KP44DX2U) and the DVD print was as good as the Phillips. Both same price. Best thing is the whole Sony package is thinner than the phillips, by 3"!!
