Thats very dangerous to slag me off on a thread I know a damned lot about!

The main reason that I or my Head close our school is that half of the teachers can't make it in and we would have no-one to teach the pupils. There is also the Health and Safety factor of icy paths and lack of staff to deal with the pupils who turn up.

Teachers are outstandingly well paid these days - if they are not then they are not achieving a level of performance that we would expect, otherwise they rapidly climb up the payscale (remember that teachers get an annual rise in spring with everyone else BUT they ALSO get a movement up the payscale! - at todays inflation rate of about 3%, teachers regularly get over 6%!)

Whatever they say, the 'time off' is incredibly generous!

If we want to feel for someone in the Education system we should feel for the Classroom Learning Support Assistants on around £8,000.

Its funny how the same teachers who can't 'struggle in' from home because of a bit of snow also volunteer to 'escort' a few kids on an 'All Expenses Paid' Ski-ing holiday in the Alps!! (In school time, of course!!) Oh, yes, and can they please take their boyfriend/husband/wife/girlfriend to 'Help them cope'?!

I couldn't stand in front of a class of 16 year olds and teach - I would end up bopping a couple right on the nose!! Its a tough job when they are actually in a classroom, but there are tougher jobs out there ................... think of those in a hot factory, sweating away on some boring production line, dreaming of their 2 weeks off ...... while teacher is preparing next terms lessons on a beach in the South of France!

It is all about public sector attitudes in ther final analysis. Do the minimum, use any excuse to have a few days off, run the organisation for the convenience of the employees rather than the pupils/customers/patients. Use risk assessments and health and safety as your justification for no effort, no creativity and loads of inertia.

theres some old women on here.....my school used to close 20 years ago in winter when the weather was bad.....my kids now go to the same school and it hasnt closed in the 4 years they have been there.

its ironic that many on SN like to jump on the "ohhhh, society has to blame someone when its their own fault" when actually SN is looking to blame society when no ones at fault. some ppl seem very bitter about living here and what being in this country entails....i assume you have multimap? then look up Heathrow and sod off!

So I assume that all the doctors and nurses and other public sector workers who live beside the teachers couldn't get to work either so do we just close the hospitals, no I didn't think so, the teachers dont start until 8.30 - 0900 by which time the gritters have been out for 3 hours so no excuse for anybody other than those in very rural areas not being able to travel surely?

Your Head indeed. Considering the voluntary role you fulfill and the occasional meetings you go to, thats rich. Close the school?? LMAO you haven't the right to close the gates!

Interesting that as a governor you take this 'us' and 'them' view. Never heard a governor take this stance before.

I think you will find that male teachers do a far better job of educating children and installing discipline IMHO.

And why is it that adults cannot drive when it snows. It wasn't even laying but for some reason drivers just become so crap and grid lock appears. 1 hour and a half to get home on the bus that equates to about 4.66 mph whats going on. The adults of today

Are you a parent?
If so what would be your reaction if you got a phonecall to say little Buck got hit in the eye today with a snowball and is blind, you would blame the school but if it was in your garden who would you blame. Or for instance if they fell and cracked open their skull, the schools are only acting in the best interests of the pupils, or were you a parent that because of the school closing had to make other arrangements, how inconsiderate.
Now as for have they never heard of shovel or putting down grit, most schools are council owned and if I'm not wrong it is the responsibility of the council to grit them and make them safe, to put it mildly if you put grit down at the end of your path and I slipped on it and injured myself I would be sueing you, are you trained in health and safety, have you put the correct stuff down in the correct way.
By the way what do you do for a living and would you have got there without teachers?
I just wish people would lay off teachers, if they do their jobs properly then their working day is usually about 10 or 12 hours long, long holidays, forget it, they have marking, preparation, in the summer schools usually have some kind of refurb so they have to go in to help and clear. Remember aswell they are salary based so there is no overtime or time off in lieu. Where would a country be without teachers? The only kids that end up not learning at school are the one's who don't want to learn then end up regretting it years later when they look what they are doing.
Oh by the way I married a teacher so I do know a bit what I'm talking about and it really annoys me when people start having a go.

An NTA we know earns £36k (someone let it slip), for doing hardly anything - that is more than the teachers themselves.

Yeah OK, try 7:30am I'm still in bed when she leaves for work.

There is a definate difference between primary and secondary teachers though re workload, times in etc

The Chairman of Governors has the legal right to shut a school if he deems fit! Check your facts before posting absolute rubbish!

You wouldn't be working in my school as a teacher, not with your attitude and blatant lack of knowledge of the Governors duties. Of course you wouldn't have heard a governor ..... as you CLEARLY do NOT listen!

I sincerely hope you are not a teacher and are just winding people up as I would fear for the children in your care .... you have a very twisted view of your superiors!

OK, so an hour and a half then in your case, but I think that even then the roads would be clear, everybody else manages to get to work! You are starting to be very predictable but like I said before it seems that the teachers are the only members of society who can't get to work, make of that what you like
