My mcrae has done 107,000 and its on its way out as its abit loud and as i touch the pedal it makes a grinding sound! Its the original clutch on the car so its done quite well. However, i've been quoted 600 bucks for a new one! Is this a good price or not really?? and i've got my insurance due and i've got 700 bucks of body work being done in 2 weeks! the missis is gonna have my nuts on a plate!

Hmm- I know what you mean - I've been quoted 800 - however, I've also been quoted 250 inc. a standard clutch - BUT most people on here seem to feel the AP uprated clutch is the one to go for - which is 300+VAT on its own !!!!

Who is "most people"?

The Borg and Beck replacement unit is fine for standard and relatively mildly modified cars, there is simply no need to spend more.

Having purchased a B&B it isn't as strong or of the same quality as the stock item. At a third of the price though it'll do the job for std or lightly modded cars.

£300 for and AP? Try £475 inc release bearing.

GM _ Wondered who'd pick that massive generalisation of mine up - Should have guessed really - 'Most' people is 'extensive results of my searching for 4 days on scooby net, finding 90% of people getting a clutch go for the uprated AP one, with the exception of GM, who recommends B+B for standard or midly tuned, and BOB'5 (who - well see his post just above) + 2 recommendations from Scoobyshop suppliers'

I have to say, I'm inclined to agree with the comment that the standard one will do for mildy tuned cars - I've been slowly modding my 98 UK Turbo for 2 years, now with 280bhp and the standard clutch has only just started giving out - plus its (the clutch) done 80000 miles, so I reckon its wear, rather than torque making it slip

However, as I'm hoping to increase power via FMIC/Injectors/TD05 etc within the next 2 years, I think I'd be foolish to fit the standard plate, whilst I'm doing the job - Maybe I should have been a bit clearer, in my earlier post - sorry...

BOB, 310+Vat is for 3 piece kit from API David (though I have to confess to not knowing the 3 components - GM, perhaps you can advise, but I asked for a quote on AP clutch and Bearing - 310+VAT is the answer)

I reckon I'll go for that and get a reliable chap I know to fit (150 quid - On a Saturday!)....

Cheers,

Mark

£310+vat sounds like a bargain for complete kit (Clutch plate, clutch cover and release bearing) AP kits only have 2 pcs as you have to buy the release bearing on-top @£75+

If you could get the price confirmed I may well buy one too @that price

BOB, That price was given to me yesterday by David - Its an Exedy version, which he says is the basis of the AP 'organic' ...

I'd leave ringing him until Tuesday lunch if I were you, so I can get my call in first

Hope that helps,

Mark

Ah that makes more sense then as the Exedy is cheaper.

OK - David pretty much implies its the same item - without the AP logos. As I said to GM, I don't really want to replace the clutch with a standard item, as I'm hoping to go 300-350 next year, and don't want to pay another 200 notes to have it fitted !

You don't sound overly keen on the Exedy one. Any reasons or is it just the 'AP' reputation ?

Ta,

Mark

Only reason being is I havent heard much said about the exedy but have heard great things about the AP. Someone on here will know if they are in fact the same or not.

I think my clutch is on the way out.. I I'm near ST Helens, where should i take the car to get it done.. At the moment, it only slips when the Turbo kicks in in 4th and 5th gear. Revs go up.. but the car takes it time catching up to them.. (Slip)? Hope it is my clutch..

Ive been quoted £425 all in. Vat too. With "genuine" Subaru part is this right?

I'm guessing the dealership would cost more..

Ted,

You may pay a little more but ProSport in Stockport will do it properly. An AP from them fitted inc vat is around £650-700, OEM around £450 IIRC.
