I agree with somedude (and am also not religous) that a god would not necessarily control the lives of 6 billion people.
However, you would have thought he would keep an eye on the general situation and intervene in things like the Holocaust!
He obvisouly saw fit to smite Sodom and Gomorrah, and wipe out most things in the great flood, according to the bible, so how come the change of heart?

One of the problems is that we tend to focus a lot on certain issues, and less on others.
I don't think many people realise that in Ruanda/Burundi, a massacre took place claiming at least 1/6th (if you don't fancy revisionism) of the jews/homosexuals/roma people (now somehow calles "pikeys") that died in the holocaust, in less than 2 months. But somehow this tragedy didn't "pull our chains".
As easy as it is to say "God will save us all", it is easy to blame "a god".
Maybe virii are the "chosen ones" and us humans don't even rank higher than 14 legged "centipedes"
It's one of the reasons most religions don't impress me much: no respect for other life forms. Now if you can somehow manage to portray other people, religions, or cultures (or tribes) as "less than human", inferior, you have a recipy for disaster.
I do love to think about this, and wonder, wonder... but I don't laugh with religious people either.

God has given us authority to rule the earth justly

How kind of God to give us responsibility for the earth so he doesn't need to bother with it himself... So, he created us then 'dumped' us.
What exactly does God do in return for the worshipping he gets these days then? Oh yes, he ocassionally causes 'earthquakes, floods, and other stuff' as you say, 'but only God knows why'. Maybe one day he'll tell us why and then we can stop doing the things that makes him want to kill us every now and again. Nice chap.

SubaruMarsBar, I think "he" did. There are scriptures, guidelines, commandments etc. I think you should read the stuff before just dismissing it. There is some serious internal logic in the "bigger" religions, and you can only dismiss them after doing a serious study.

So I put forward: whilst we are alive, we have a trillion of opportunities. We can be who we want, what we want, how we want it (given the "talents" we got). We can be a troll on Scoobynet, or a cancer researcher, or a gardener, or <fill in what you want>
We have one go at this, then the final whistle blows.
Can you see that this idea doesn't mean we should be totally without any moral ?
9/11 or Madrid today, it's just as hard to folk who get their moral values from religion as for those who don't.

by the way i forgot to add, snacks asked me where was God when eta blew up the people in spain
God is their but why is their a war between eta and spain, see u dont wanna look at the problem, its easy for u to say its this and that, its sick what happened, if spain didnt occupy the basque region this wont have happened, so why doesnt man stop oppressing or fecking people about.
so if their is a problem remedy it, why does palestine and the israelis kill each other, sort the problem , remedy it and u wont have it, how would we know about basque, palestine, chechnya if their werent any bombs from the opposition, we wont they would get cleansed and wont come on the news, these people want attention and help for others to help them , when no one does they do evil and extreme things.
chechen suicide bomber goes and bombs people, is he doing it for fun, doesnt he have a family and a wife and kids who will suffer when he dies coz majority of them chechens are poor, of course he knows that but he wants to avenge his people , coz no one in the world will help

But remember, when people are dying, or when something cruel happens to their families, they suddenly see the void they always "avoided" to think about whilst pissing themselves through life.

IMO, Beleiving in God or choosing to live by only what is scientificly proven,are only seperated by a very fine line,Faith.
If people choose to live their lives following something from a book that came about a couple of thousand years ago,then let it be.The harder you look into the scriptures,the more they make sense.If you choose to live life for today and make the most of it whilst your body has life then good luck to you.
As a beleiver in God I find it difficult to understand the mentality of non beleivers (im sure its the same the other way round).I find that driving around for thrills and spills is enjoyable,but just a waste.On the other hand going on a journey somewhere,may not be such an adrenaline rush,but if the destination is exciting then you have a real reason to drive.
The point is,you know youre gonna die one day,and if the end result is gonna be you turn to nothing and your memories,experiences,emotions and feelings are going to be wiped out (like a CD thrown into a fire) ,then why bother making the compilation in the first place?
If the you beleive in God then you will have a destination to goto(Heaven)
the CD compilation will last forever.
If you dont, your wheelspinning in the car park,and you may aswell just listen to the sound of the tyres.
Hope this is understandable(Im having difficulty trying to read this aswell)

Yes, I agree it's very nice to believe there is a God and an eternal life in heaven and this will give many people the strength to live full lives and get through the difficult times they face. I guess the reason so many people do believe is hope. Hope that there is something to look forward to when they die, hope that they will once again be reunited with there loved ones and hope that what they do in life will not be lost at the end. I have this hope as well, but that doesn't make me a believer because I see no real evidence, just stories and speculation.
Moses, we both will not budge from our beliefs or lack of them and nothing will change that for either of us. Come on scoobysnacks how do you not believe in God/Allah he helps you everyday you should not put my fellow believers down they are right you are indeed very wrong and will burn in the fires of hell for eternity.

I'm not a god fearer but do understand why people feel the need to believe. I used to but do not any more.

Look at the facts, ignore what you've been taught to believe and keep an open mind and its clear on a human level and on a day to day basis there is no proof/evidence of there being a god. There is no factual proof of aliens,ghosts or the Loch Ness monster either. I'm afraid religious faith is no more than human beings trying to justify a purpose to their futile existence.
