Cucumber is talking absolute good sense. It is the only honest way to look at it.

Take your pick !!
Not quite the case, because we know what happened from a few hundreths of a second after the big bang up until now. Also, athiests don't try to justify their existence, they accept that it is the result of 15 billion years of hydrogen evolving, nothing more. They also accept that once it's over it's over, so they are really quite different.

That does not discount a God of course, but....................

Geezer,
What your saying is exactly my point. We don't know what happened many moons ago, we only have some relatively crude theories and some basic scientific explanations, that at present to some people seem to stack up, people are willing to accept them as there is no better answer. They are not FACTS.
Just as religion could be no more than a set of guidelines/rules and ethics on how to live a life based on a set of tales and stories written by man. They could be complete works of fiction?. There are no facts to prove otherwise, period.
Any blind faith in a religion and any form of trying to justify it with so called facts or reason as more important than the nexts mans belief has surely got to show man up for his true ignorance for another man.
I find it quite strange and unbelievable that people are willing to accept things that are presented to them without question just because they probably can't come up with anything better.

Cucumber, then what you were saying was not clear to me! You seemed to be saying that science is not better then religion, why believe one set of rules as opposed to another?

I would say that knowledge of the origins of the universe post big bang are a little more than crude theories basic scientific explanations compared to what is in the bible.

Most scientific knowledge is based upon experimentation and proof. You can repeat those experiments for yourself to see that they are true (obviously not everyone has access to billion $ particle accelerators), unlike the situation in religion, where you are relying on the word of a few people from thousands of years ago, when knowledge of how things really work was pretty non-existent.

OK, What I'm trying to say is this, for example when you look at say a human being, the big bang theory doesn't hold water, yes some things can be explained by science but to say the complex workings of a human being can be attributed to a big bang millions of years ago followed by years of evolution to get where we are today is totally absurd.
On the otherhand if you apply the same sort of factual logic to religion and you keep an open mind that doesn't stack up either.
I am not one side of the fence or the other, I an totally open minded but it does seem like there is some sort of missing link that definately cannot be explained by science and is what a vast majority of people would probably attribute to being god, regardless of what religion you are or whether you can or cannot explain it.

As I said, what Cucumber said is entirely sensible in view of the known facts and theories, tempered with some intelligent thought.

The thing is, you have to make up your own mind what to believe, and then follow your conscience. Doesn't mean to say you have to revile those who believe differently to yourself though.
