It wouldn't be that quick.

For some reason Radicals never seem "that" quick i a straightline given their claimed power.

IIRC, at the 0-100 event, a 252hp SR3 did 0-100 in 8.5 secs. Not tooo bad, but in a car that's geared for 128mph and supposedly weighs 500kg, something doesn't add up....160hp Westie XTR2 did it in 9secs and is geared for 145mph - plus it weighs 535kg........

Reckon high 11s for the Radical on that basis

Cool AutoCar 0-100-0 Article

Well here it is, though not quite the info wanted.

The Caterham R500 won with a time of 11.25s (7.26 to 100mph), with the Radical at 12.68s (8.00 to 100).
Unfortunately it only gives standing mile times but you can speculate what the 1/4 times would be.
The Caterham wasn't that quick (yeah right) on the standing mile because of the limited top speed (31.2 s at 145mph)

The road legal drag car was taxed, had number plates and treaded legal road tires. It was a 1956 Chevrolet Street Eliminator with 10,740cc V8 giving 1280bhp and 900 lb ft with a two speed gearbox. It made 60 in 2.63s, 100mph in 4.79s, whilst still in first gear ! Total time 0-100-0 was 10.9 (although parachute assisted braking). Top speed was 195 over standing mile of 25.9s. Awesome...

BTW there were two RS200's at the Sunseeker Rally a couple of weeks ago, but I missed their demo run

Hi Everybody!

Last year at the top fuel finals at Spod (about 5 September IIRC) there were a few road legal cars doing the 1/4 mile.

The commentator droaned on and on about this Audi being the fastest road legal car in the UK.

It looked like a real Audi and not a particularly new or flash looking one at that. The "Judges" had checked it over and been out in it for a spin before the run just check it really was road legal.

It had road tyres IIRC

I think it managed just under 9s

Is this the sort of thing you are interested in. A car you can drive about in that goes real quick in a straight line. Insurance might be a bit pricey though!

Cheers....

....Dr Nick wanders off to the Spod web site to see if they keep records of times and events......

Hi Everybody! (again)

Back from my wanderings... I could'nt find anything useful on the Spod website so I did a few calculations of my own....

A quarter mile is 402 m

To cover this distance in 9 seconds or less you have to average a speed of 44.7 m/s (which by a strange coincidence is almost exactly 100 mph).

From a standing start and under constant acceleration you would have to cross the line doing exactly 200 mph (OK, constant acceleration is an approximation but lets go with it for now).

This would mean hitting 60 mph after 2.7 seconds.

I acknowledge the above discussions about fastest production cars and the 3.06 s record but, of course, whilst these cars are road legal, it does not mean they have not been substantially modified.

Just some thoughts for a Friday

Cheers

My money would be on something like this twin turbo Ultima:

That is because of my approximation about constant acceleration.

In reality I would expect a slightly below average bit of acceleration at the beginning as the tyres fight to get traction - minimised by a good launch control system.

Then a really fast bit of acceleration as grip is fully achieved and optimum torque levels reached.

Then a steadily declining bit of acceleration as wind resistance builds up.

The fastest top fuel full on dragster I have seen did the quarter mile in 4.99 seconds and crossed the line at 299.9 mph. If wind resistance was not an issue this would be somewhat closer to 360 mph.

Cheers!

Officially the Ford RS200 was sold in three guises:

Ford RS200 - 250hp
Ford RS200 Evolution - 450hp
Ford RS200 Evolution - 650hp

All were standard, out of the factory. The car which set the 3.06s time had not been altered in any way (other than being driven a bit) in the engine or suspension - I cannot vouch for whether or not there were aftermarket gearknobs or not though.

The car was fully road-legal, factory standard and a production model.

The McLaren F1 LM is non-production because only 5 cars were made. The Tiger Z100 is non-production because only a few pre-built cars exist - the rest are kit built. I'd assume Guinness have some form of minimum number of cars to specify "production". The Dauer is non-production because it is a modified Porsche (well, kind of... See "Brabus" and "Ruf". But it IS limited by the fact that there were only 50 Porsche 962s made). The Speed 12 is non-production because there's only 3 of them.

That was me 9.95 Sec @ 153 mph

No idea about these kit or borderline kit cars, or mega modified machines that would be borderline legal and hardly road drivable, but looking at showroom or almost-showroom machinery...wouldn't a Ferrari Enzo, launch control and all, be pretty quick down a dragstrip?

Anyone has any numbers?
