It depends on whether the car was warmed up. Provided my car was brought up to full opperation temperature I'd actually want the mechanic to give it some welly just to satisfy himself that everything was as it should be. My untrained ears might not pick something up that his might. 78mph in a scooby is hardly excessive, lets be honest. If there was anyway to know it had been done within 3 minutes of starting up them I'd go totally mental but otherwise I kind of expect/hope that my car gets a proper road test.

I don't really agree with that at all. Not in this case anyway. The problem was a duff seal causing leakage from the rear diff. It needed to be replaced, and checked to ensure that it was no longer leaking. There's nothing to listen to, trained ears or not. 78mph is excessive in any car when the speed limit on the roads in the vicinity is 50mph at the most as far as I know. I'm not talking about stress on the car here, as I mentioned above, I'm talking about the hassle of having to prove it wasn't me in the car in the event of the guy getting caught speeding.

There is also no need to rev to anything like 7000 rpm. It's just un-necessary. Give it some welly sure... put as much torque as you like through the dif to make sure the seal is holding up. Peak torque however is not at 7000rpm.

He was having a jolly... it's as simple as that. Even the service manager said he looked sheepish when he questioned him about it.

However, having gone back this afternoon to have another chat with the Service manager, I've calmed down alot. He was very reasonable, and very apologetic. I showed him the secs unit, and he's offered to do my 1yr body treatment and inspection for free, and pay for the synthetic oil and filter on my next service. I was also satisfied that he found the mechanics test drive to be as excessive as I did, and my fears about taking the car back to them in future have been mostly alleviated.

I disagree here however, as a scorned mechanic may well prove spiteful if ever near your car again!

And dont forget the SECS reads the road speed alot better than the speedo, which at 78mph on the SECS would be reading about 85 on the speedo... all that in an area with no roads above 60...

I see both sides of the coin here, personally I would have a word with the service manager to see what his response is. The downside to not letting the guy work on your car again is that you will probably have some spotty apprentice on it next time. Be upfront with them next time and it should stop any further problems. I feel a good relationship with dealers is desireable IMHO.
Just a quick question what would you expect the dealer to do for you if say you had a vibration at 90mph ?

I also think a good relationship with the dealer is important. Up until now, I'd had a very freindly relationship with both the Subaru and Peugeot dealerships that I frequented.

Edited, just to add that i hope to develope a similar relationship with these people. With any luck, this won't happen again, and I can forget about it.
