You can use the ECU on it's own and it will control boost up to the limit of your original MAP sensor (which varies by year) The ECU can be mapped via laptop.
There is no longer a factory overboost cut, to run higher boost the next step would be to fit a manual boost contoller such as a dawes valve.
The Apexi "boost control kit" consists of a higher rated MAP sensor and a fast acting solenoid valve, this allows the ECU to control the boost up to approx 2.2 bar.
The ECU has 4 different boost settings. To access them in the car you would need a Commander handset. The hand set is also useful for monitoring different engine functions such as Boost, Injector duty, Mass air flow and Knock level.
Next step up is using the AVC-R for boost control, this will work as a 'stand alone' or in conjunction with the ECU. Only 2 boost settings are available but the unit has the ability to profile the boost throughout the rpm range and also vary it depending which gear you are in. With the AVC-R you do not need the "boost control kit" the same uprated MAP sensor and fast acting solenoid valve are actually supplied as part of the std AVC-R kit.

if you were starting from scratch would you use the apexi boost kit in conjuction with the power fc or the AVC-R with the power fc?
Surely the boost kit would be better?

I ran one on my 92MY for a while, they really are pretty good to be honest. If your going to run much boost on an early one you really need to change the injectors though, I topped mine out v early on in the process, you end up getting awesome det as the boost comes in
Cheers

btw - sorry to be "on topic"

Palatine - The boost control kit is good but the setpoint applies to every gear and it is held across the full rpm range.
For the small extra cost I would go for the AVC-R, it can really improve the cars performance in the lower gears by changing the boost profile and yet still retain a good safety margin in the higher gears where the engine load is higher.
Raymond - The ECU can be used with most aftermarket boost controllers, up to the boost limit of the original MAP sensor or the new boost controller sensor if fitted.

Ok lets continue the thread the folks
Ive just been playing around today doing some D I Y modifications. Which have worked really well. It feels like ive given the car 20 bhp whether i have or not is another matter.I found a wider aliminum tube to go with my hks mushroom fillter. Also put a bigger innercore tubing pipe of 6.4 mm from the boost solinoid to the actuator. It was 5mm (the second pipe down) my94 wrx Im that pleased with the results its going to have a dyno at the weekend.geez cant wait for the apexi re map.

Been away for a bit and noticed Cord spouting off..
Andy F is by far the best mapper of the Power FC in the country. RC and RB are utter ****e compared to him and I should know have my car mapped using all 3, all using AVC-R which incidently RB set up to work on a car other than a Subaru.
Harvey set up my avc-r better than RB did.
Who else can map these units Cord????
Hi Andy Fancy your car back??

I was going to bring my Scooby all the way from Iceland to RC
Is this a general opinion or just one bad customer experience ?
I have only read good reviews about them.....

Ill be using AndyF (when my two colleagues finally get their pfc's ) and trust him implicitly.
safest and most reliable way to research tuners Armann would be to do a search on here and at least build up a general consensus.
Unless I knew my source very well, I wouldnt take one persons word for it either way

I spent 4 weeks phoning to get GT-ART to tune it and was fobbed off every time. I ended up at Tuning Japanese in the SW London area, who did a combination of rollers and road mapping (I was satisfied with their service!)
I've done quite a few more mods, and will be arranging an Andy F. session shortly - I've never heard anyone complain about him - unlike they have about other companies.

Overall, I have no problem recommending fitting one to your motor, just make sure you get someone experienced and capable of mapping it.

"I was going to bring my Scooby all the way from Iceland to RC "
Are you sure it was RC Developments and not RC Motorsport ?
I know Roger Clarke Motorsport is popular with at least one other Icelandic racer
