How slow are the non turbo'd scoobys?

time youve bought your sport for say 6k (a bloody nice one) or spent 6k on a turbo that has prob been kicked the dung out of and already been subject to carlos fandango type mods and with the extra money saved on ins. fuel etcd stick a stainless exhaust on change a filter (and free up the below 3000 rpm problem--if there is one) and youve got yourself a classic piece of motoring history that you will enjoy

My 1st scooby was a DBM sport with 5 spoke gold STI alloys.. loved it, the only problem was that most non-subaru drivers do not know that it was not the WRX, so when faced with pulling away from the lights quickly, most sorted hatches (plus t-diesels) would give it a hard time! and then glee at the fact they burned off a subaru impreza wrx...
I used to look forward to servicing days because they would lend me a UK WRX, and the journey from Bristol to Chippenham left me with a smile that lasted for days.. the Sport could never do that..So..I had to get the new STI
Anyway my point is I loved that sport, and wish people would not compare them with the UK & Jap turbos...they are like chalk & cheese, the sport simply does not have enough umph to make passengers say "bl00dy hell this is quick!", they do handle I admit, but as soon as the road opens out a bit the sport is dust... but that's really no surprise is it.

Ive owned two sports my98 110bhp my00 125bhp got an extra 15 on the phase 2! Magnex cat back and k&n filter made them fast enough, on the motorway 70-80 in top they pulled away better than the my02 wrx i have now!

I have a Sport and a WRX. I took the Sport on 300 mile journey today and after a cuppa nipped out in the WRX for a blast! Ah, that's better!
The Sport is fine for day to day driving but I doesn't come close to the WRX. From a handling point of view the turn in on the WRX is spot on while the Sport has less feel and is less precise. I'm on 16's on the Sport with uprated WRX brakes but the Sport is much slower at stopping too. If only there had been the Legacy's 2.5 in the Sport it would have been so much better.
I noticed today that very few people kept up with me in the Sport though!

Sports are great cars providing they are kept as they were intended ie no turbo scoops and vents etc.People ruin these cars by making them look like something they clearly arent. Not surprising really that small hot hatches try it on and destroy them from the lights im sure it must be embarrassing for the scooby driver and big grins for the spotty hot hatch wannabe not that im generalising.
All IMO of course before anyone starts flaming me

N/A US Spec Impreza
I love my 2000 US Spec Impreza 2.5 RS. Its a 165 HP, 2.5 liter. It goes plenty fast for me. My only complaint is that the rev limiter seems to kick on awfully fast in third gear, just as it is winding up to freeway speed. I autocross mine (tarmac slalom) and run mostly in 2nd gear. Plenty of punch. I've never driven a turbo Impreza. (I lead a seriously deprived life). My wife's Outback 2.5 Automatic is S-l-o-w, but an excellent highway cruiser. Hers gets 18-22 mpg (US), while mine gets 25-29 with 5 speed stick. I love the no-turbo lag, instant torque. The AWD makes for quick launches, though with clutch judder when cold. The only mods are K & N drop in air filter and bigger 18MM rear bar. Fun car. I don't miss my old Eagle Talon AWD Turbo with 30 more HP. I regularly set quicker times than many (not all) WRX turbos, and my "classic" beats them all on looks.
