Anyone own a Caterham?

Used to have an R500, got rid of it after the scare stories over engine reliability, rebuild costs, etc Not suprising really given 230bhp out of a n/a 1.8 k series, but didn't think about this when buying it, sometime the heart rules the head.
Will always remember the noise, and the utter brutality of the performance, scared the hell out of most people who went in it, me included !!
Would love another 7 (R300 or Superlight) but financial circumstances don't allow anymore.

It was built by Kenrick Motors for the guy I bought it off and has pretty much everything you could ever need! swindon engine with all steel internals, forged pistons, slide thorttles, dry sumped, DTA management, ported big valve head, came etc etc. Revs to about 9.5k! quaife dog box, stack dash, etc etc...
Truly awesome and frighteningly quick!

Catflap,
Don't forget the quick Westies too. Mick Coopers 240+ s2000 engined, carbon bodied SE (cost would be less than an R300 kit too ) and Garry Bunns 270hp 2.4 cossie engined, carbon bodied one. Both "fairly quick"
Then theres Mikes 360hp, 4.8litre sequential boxed, benetton built westie. Goes adequately well too
Out of interest, R300 race cars go round Dono national in about 1.14.

Tempted to get myself a cat in the not to distant, but if I dont get one then I will be looking at a radical.
I want something that I can play with on the roads, but mainly for trackday fun, without the hassle of crap noise limits.

CrtaigH Im not forgeting the fast westys, Im a westy man myself
However, there was no mention of westfields in austen_wrx`s post and dident want to seem like a name dropper *grin*
Dont forget the fast westfields...
Think the point being, that a blade or 9R or even r1 they may be quick, but get it on track and youll soon see that your very very average in comparison to other westfiled and caterhams.

Guys, I hate to bring an aspect of practicality into the discussion, but what's the ground clearance like on a BEC? We have speed humps nearby, and sump clearance (or lack of) is a problem I remember with my Dutton. Wonder if the smaller engine size solves that problem.
Just for theoretical interest, you understand

Hi Dan - long time no speak mate
Saw your comments earlier about getting a Cat. I know where you are coming from. I've always wanted to do this and after 4 years of Scoob ownership, I'm thinking about something different. A guy at work has just done exactly this. He had gone for a normal company car (surprisingly good X Type Diesel) and he has also got a fantastic Caterham. He used to be a fairly serious kart racer and reckons the Cat is the closest you can get to it on the road. Very tempting....
