Wehey!! We have found some common ground lol.
I tend to think the Yanks are a bit OTT, but you have to admit they do seem to have a national pride that we seem to have lost somewhere along the line.

Be more politically active. Don't just be a cynic as that never changes anything. If you want change things then be prepared to put some of your own time and effort into doing it. It doesn't necessarily mean joining political parties, just getting involved with issues which matter.
Don't be spoon fed with what the media says. Research the facts first, you may come to a different conclusion.
Try to see things though the eyes of others. If you don't understand the problem, you are never going to find a solution.
Treat other people/places/property as you would like them to treat you/yours.
Take responsibility for your own actions. Don't complain the country is full of litter and then drop cigarette butts. Don't whinge about taxes and then pay cash-in-hand or evade import duties. Don't inflate insurance claims and then complain the premiums have gone up.
Learn how to give out criticism in a non personal way, and accept constructive criticism in the same way. Don't start a flame wars on Scoobynet !!!
Of course I will be receptive to any and all constructive criticisms on the above, you lazy, cynically, reactionary, Sun-reading b@stards

Invading France and getting Brittany back? Not a bad idea now I think about it, wouldn't take more than a couple of Transit vans of squaddies who stop off at a liquor store in Calais first...

I do however agree on the tax break front. There should be tax relief for a single earner when his partner takes leave to raise their child in the situation you highlight (1 x £70k paying highest tax bracket whilst 2x £35k dont)
