Jas03WRX - are you sure that the Octavia 4X4's 4WD system isn't the Haldex system?

I thought that all VAG cars based on the Golf platform (which the 'Tavia is) used the same system. The Passat is a different kettle of fish.

Secondly the 4x4 systems which the Tavia uses (not RS) isnt the Halix system the golf 4Motion uses. Its the passat version which isnt as good.
lol - two important points...

1) Octavia does use the haldex that is used in golf 4motion, TT, etc etc...

2) The torsen system in the passat and A4 is if anything better - I'd gladly have that instead!

What Ive read in a Independant VW mag. Even if it is the Haldex system, I’m sure the Impreza is a better handling car, as the AWD system is honed for the impreza. Unlike a Octavia which has borrowed it from somewhere else. The car in question is the vRS. I only stated the 4x4 as having the lesser power of 150BHP with the K03 turbocharger and that you need to upgrade the turbo to a K04, KKK or IHI twin scroll to get real power to the 4 wheels, as the smaller turbo struggles with this.(In my opinion).

ahem... You stated the Subaru is a cheap brand.... compared with what?? I just used to exclusive brands of car... which is true. They are perceived as being more upmarket. Jas...

Both the RS and 4x4 engines use a K03s - which is basically a k03 running an k04 impeller - the earlier k03 engines would get to around 200 after a remap.

K03s engines (also added VVT around this time, and may be a factor) seem to happily get 220-230 on a custom remap.

The "smaller" (than a scoobs, certainly) turbo does in no way "struggle" with this, can I ask who's remapped VVT K03s car you have been in? Compared to scoobs, even modified ones, the smaller turbo spins up far quicker and you're on boost out of corners far earlier, thus will pull away. Of course, with a longer straight, you will find the larger turbo of the scoob (once spinning) will catch and probably gain on the skoda. Thus the roads (and lengths of straights between corners) will decide which is quicker at any point. Driven hundreds of "enthusiastic" miles with scoobs and seen this time and again.

Compared to the scoob, the skoda is oddly calm, you don't get the huge shove in the back as the turbo kicks in, just progressive power from low rpm.

I'm not going to join the "xxx is a better car" debate as they are both great fun cross country. I will say, regarding the "honed" AWD system, personal preferences differ, but two facts that can't be ignored - 1) the Haldex has far less transmission losses than the scoob setup, and 2) I can get 42mpg cruising on the motorway with the Haldex.

Love the scoob, great piece of kit, but don't think it's the only quick car out there.

Ian,

Im not saying the KO3 is naff, I previously own a Golf Turbo running 197 BHP and 204 lbft. fantastic performance and enjoyed it immensely, modified at AmD in biecester who are highly regarded in the VAG tuning scene as im sure you already know. Both Geoff and Scott there advised me that to get power down quickly and effectively upgrading the turbo to a KKK (their choice over the K04) was a better route than upping boost etc. to the smaller turbo (tests have proven this). As for boost coming in at a lower rev obviously depends on how one is driving, and keeping a car on boost is going to keep the power at the ready, and can be driven like that in both cars, especially as the 03 WRX has a much smoother power delivery as the 1.8T engine.

As for the XXX is better than yours, I never wanted to get into a slanging match,... purely stated what (the average person) would say, given the choice. A Skoda is a Skoda at the end of the day. A far better car than it ever was (thanks to VW), but still has a terrible stigma to it because they were a naff car 10-15yrs ago. As for being called a badge snob if find completely laughable... I own a Subaru as NACRO suggests is a cheap Jap saloon car with a turbo, as does he... so what does that suggest?? If he doesnt like it then fine. I really dont care.

I am a very big fan of the VW scene. And have nothing against the 1.8T engine, being driven by big or small turbos. Im just not a Skoda person, along with plenty of other people im sure, but that doesn’t make anyone a idiotic badge snob.

Anyway enough on this topic, Im really becoming quite bored now.

What a fool old jas is, of course I like Imprezas, what with owning one and all.

However it doesn't make the fact that its a cheap jap saloon car any less real does it? After all Subaru still has the 'farmer' image, as well as it's recently acquired baseball cap chav following. Hardly the kind of badge to boast about is it? Compare that to the Skoda Octavias newly found image as where the 'smart money' goes as well as it's above average demographic of professional owners and in all honesty I think the Skoda has a better image and badge. Thus why I found your pub bore/boaster comments so laughable.
People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones jas.

Doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the fact that both cars offer lots of bang for your buck. The Impreza a little faster, the Octavia a little cheaper.

ZZZzzzz.......

Your a very opinionated person NACRO. Judging by your previous posts and replies to other topics you sum yourself up quite well. But I guess people on this forum already know that and what they think of you.

so when I put END at the bottom of the reply you obviously can’t grasp the fact that it meant, let it be. And the fact you said: ‘you really dont care’ then WTF do you keep replying for then...

Dont bother replying.

I think you are labouring under the misaprehension that you have mind control powers. If I want to comment on what some tosser has written then I will, despite them trying to bring their beasting to an end with comments like "don't bother replying" and "END", who the **** do you think you are?

You made out that owning a Skoda is some kind of embarassment, I merely pointed out that Subaru is hardly a name to inspire awe in terms of bragging rights. You don't like it, that's fine, feel free to carry on deluding yourself, but don't expect to be able to censor other points of view.

You've been exposed as a badge snob and a deluded one at that.

Here let me have a go at being an arrogant to55er like you- DON'T BOTHER REPLYING.

Ah and I was wondering if Mr Tavia was posting on here. My reply to the first comment on this thread was going to be "You know when you've been TaviaRS'd"

Does the vRS come with 4x4? Always thought it was FWD only? I know there is a 4x4 Tav, but did not think it was the vRS. If the vRS IS 4x4 then cool bananas!

I was looking at autotrader, and for around 12k you can get a very nice vRS, stick another 3500 onto that (spend it at Jabba or AMD) and you'll end up with a very nicely sorted Q car that'll upset std scoobs and possibly a few modified ones.

Would I get one? hell yes! was considering one before I moved out here and sold the hearse.

So what's with the attitude? It was stated in this thread that on paper the standard vRS can not beat a standard WRX fullstop when clearly on paper it can.

I'm far from being a dumbwit, just stating the facts that some people have got wrong.

Having been an impreza owner, trackday go'er and a member of this bbs for years I do have a bit of knowledge about scoobs you know.

Hand bags at ten paces then girls !!
Every man to his own & all that
If you want an argument get married thats my answer
who cares what is quicker on paper, i am up for a meet (in scotland) with any VAG group cars, to have a little chat & to compare each others cars
If it wasnt for that pot ov gold i have hidden then i would have seriously considered a Skoda vRS or whatever (not clued up on the VAG groups soz)
But once again everyman to there own lets all put an end to this bickering & enjoy our cars for what they are not what we think they are.

I was once considered to be a total tit in 1993 when I bought a 'new' Subaru Legacy Turbo. People laughed about how it wasn't a proper performance car.

A year later Subaru GB launched the Impreza with the same engine etc etc etc.
My turn to laugh.

In 2003 I was bored with Audis and my last Impreza imploded. I bought a 4x4 Octavia.
People laughed again, but louder.

I remapped it, have honestly no regrets and I now just smile as it pulls away from most 'superior badged' cars. I guess that I'm a middle-aged tit now.

Autocar once tested a vRS at well under 6 secs to 60,hence why they can sometimes catch a Scoob owner unawares (or in the wrong gear,or daydreaming to Richard Clayderman)

fact is,the VRS is fast enough to make other road users think its faster than it is,particularly in secong gear

I loved the Scoob I had,and still miss it,but for a daily comfortable-but-occasionally-silly-road-race-car-for daily-commute the vRS takes some beating

for 10k for a 3 year old model,they are a steal

I remember the Autocar test and the comments that followed weeks later about Skoda perhaps sending a car with the 225bhp rather than the 180bhp they'd owned up to.

In any case we all know that 225bhp is only a Jabba remap away- that being the case I'd say a 6.0 second Skoda isn't anything to laugh at is it?

Or an alternative view- laugh away right up to the point where you wonder why you can't shake the thing off.

A few yrs ago I watched a then largely unknown, plain looking saloon car blasting its way round the 'ring in some good times (and overtaking me in my MK2 Golf), since then I've had nothing but respect for the Octavia.

Respect it for its abilities or laugh at the badge? As others have pointed out a few yrs ago people were laughing at the idea of a performance Subaru as it was just a "farmers car".

Even Autocar subsequently commented that this was an unusually fast example, and suspected some subtle 'tuning'.
